Surgery in 1 week...can I still breastfeed after?

I'm having a TVH in 6 weeks and my baby will be 4 months old and I will still be breastfeeding. The plan is to breastfeed just before surgery and as soon as I am alert enough to hold her. Some people say you should pump and dump for 24 hours, but it's not necessary. There are many pain medications compatible with breastfeeding as well. I have some websites that might help you. If you want, I can look them up.

Hi Beachbunni,

Make sure your surgeon and anesthesiologis know that you desire to continue breastfeeding, they can make sure you get the best meds to meet your needs. Good for you for doing your homework !!

Hi Beachbuni! I'm so glad to hear that you aren't planning on weaning just yet. Be sure to tell your Drs about continuing to breastfeed. Pumping and dumping is not necessary but you may want to pump before your surgery to have some supplemental bottles of breast milk to give when you may not be feeling up to nursing. You can nurse your baby in the hospital if someone can bring the baby to you, just try to time the feeding just before you are ready for your next dose of pain medication to lessen the drowsy affect it can have on your baby. Use plenty of pillows for support so that the baby is away from your incision. Drink plenty of fluids and remember to have someone carry the baby to you and pick the baby up after you are finished nursing as I'm sure the baby weighs 10 pounds or more and that is usually the weight restriction for the first 6 weeks post-op. I am a lactation nurse so if you have any questions I would be happy to help. Feel free to PM me anytime. 's
