Bowel prep and gas pain connection?

Is there a difference in gas pain between those who do a pre-op bowel cleanse and those who don't? I was hoping to avoid the cleanse, but if it would stave off some of the pain after the fact that would change my mind.

Re: What is it like when you awake from surgery? (surgery 9/16)

Good question but I think the gas pain is due to the gas they put in your belly to view all your organs so we would get pain anyway

You shouldn't be making the decision to prep or not prep. That is up to your doctor. Make sure to follow his/her direction only!

I did prep, per my Dr's instructions, but others with the same Dr didn't have to. Personally, I had some gas pains that were both bowel and surgery CO2 related. Neither were unbearable. Probably a 2 or 3 on the pain scale. The bowel gas was worse for me, but it was easily taken care of with some GasX, watching out to not eat gas causing foods immediately, and to relax and "pass wind" whenever and whereever I could! ;-). CO2 gas only hit me day 2 or 3....very minor! Walking, changing positions, and peppermint tea helped.

Re: What is it like when you awake from surgery? (surgery 9/16)

The after surgery gas pain is from the gas they put in your belly so they can see to complete the procedure. I don't know if people who have a TAH have gas the same way, but they may since they are more open. The surgeon does his best to remove as much as possible. Not everyone has terrible gas pain.

My gas pain was in my chest and shoulders for a day or so. It wasn't constant but did get to me a few times. It was helpful to move around to move it on out. Gas pills helped too. My bowel gas kicked in a little later and just kept the gas pills nearby for the first week.

I didn't have bowel prep, but was handed 2 enema's and sent to the bathroom when I got the hospt. I had already went that morning so it was more of a fomality at any rate. I didn't have gas pains at all. I was in overnight and Dr said my tummy sounded good, so I got to go home..even though I hadn't passed gas. I was so excited to go home, that did it for me...I met that requirement too!
