can't urinate day after hysterectomy

Had surgery 10-17-14 everything removed except ovaries. Discharged 10-18-14 and was able yo urinate with no problem. Now I have the sensation but nothing comes out. Is this common?

Re: can't urinate

I had to have 3 foley catheters put in after my surgery, because of bladder retention. Don't wait to long to seek help. I was in a lot of pain, they had to drain 1000ml out of my bladder. I could go. Like 5 times an hour….just very little amounts, my bladder wasn't emptying. And, I was having bladder spasms.

Re: can't urinate

Could be the narcotics or just that everything is swollen. I had the same issue. This is odd but I found looking up at the ceiling and taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly sometimes helped the pee come. I'm three weeks out and still have to pee every half hour during the day-doc said some people get very angry bladders from all the jostling around. Apparently mine is still a bit peeved.

Thanks Chiron. I'm going to try it. At this point I'm willing to try just about anything.

Re: can't urinate

Do keep an eye on it, call your doc if it keeps up. They may want you to come in for a catheter. I hope not, hopefully the ceiling trick will work!! Keeping my fingers crossed for you!

Re: can't urinate

It helped me to pee if I blew through a straw. No kidding. After a couple days, all I had to do was imagine that I was blowing through a straw and I could go. I'm not sure why that works, but I think it helps relax the bladder. Remember, you have to relax to pee, not push. If it isn't better soon, like by tomorrow, you need to go to the doc.

My Dr put me on Pyridine and I was able to pee within a half hour after taking it.
