driving after 1 week???? crazy?
Ok sisters, this is my dilema, I am 5 days post op. I need to get my 17 staples out tomorrow.
I KNOW I am not supposed to drive for two weeks...but....my daughter and husband both have to work, & with me not working and making any money....I hate to ask them to not go.....
It is a 20 minute drive to my dr's office.
So anyone know the real reason that you are not supposed to drive????? You can ride with someone, so why not drive? If you feel ok???

Gee, I don't want to say the wrong thing. I was 10 days post-op when my husband took me in and I don't think I would have wanted to drive on my own. Are you on painkillers? That would mean a definite NO. If you're not, maybe you can take a mini-drive for 5 to 10 minutes and see how it feels. Try to tuck a pillow between you and the seatbelt. Really, I wish you could find someone to drive you...it just seems safer all around. Good luck!

driving after 1 week???? crazy?
O.K. This is what I think... I had my hyst, 3 weeks ago today. I love this site and am on it every day. It has helped me thru many questions and concerns. Maybe I can help you. I believe they dont want you to drive du to the medication and anesthesia that you had been given. I know that for me, Im off my strong meds and I still feel a little, "loopy" at times. Also you will be using muscles that you dont even realise that you use to drive. I dont think it would be a good idea. Your reactions to things will not be the same as they would if you were not just on meds.
Try and look into taking a cab??? Or call your doctor and explaign the situation to him. Maybe they can squeese you in the next day?? Do you have a neighbor that might be able to take you?? Please be careful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

driving after 1 week???? crazy?
Hello
I do know that if you are taking any narcotic medication or medication that makes you drowsy you cannot drive. I am 5 wks post op and just started driving with a pillow over my vertical incision between me and the seatbelt. Turning corners etc etc puts a strain on your incisiion and if you make a sudden twist you can pull those stitches. I know it is an inconvenience but you should have someone drive you. I know I try to make my appointments first thing in he am or last in pm and I explain to the dr office and dr sometimes you need to get them involved that family members can't take much time off from work. I know how you feel my poor DH has had to leave work early several times because of my appts. Try to get a ride

driving after 1 week???? crazy?
ok girls, i will see if my daughter can get away, or if maybe we can take the little boy that she sits for......with us?
i am not on any pain meds, my dr is a little ugh crazed about that......I only have ibuprophen, that i take 4 - 200 mg pills at a time.
I am doing well. I can sit for long periods with out a lot of pain.
I was not sure about the muscle pulling thing. I guess that if you are not hurt, you never do realize do you?
This is my second surgery of this type in the last 11 weeks, and I think that I may just be used to the pain, and do not even notice it as being different now!!!! Is that not sad???
thanks a bunch!!!!
ps I just found this site today and I am facinated by it, and all of the knowledge that the "sister" have. Thanks so much!

driving after 1 week???? crazy?
I dont know if this will help but I got out of the castle on 7-9-03. On a wed. late . I drove myself on 7-12-03 to get my staples out.. It's only about 5 miles... I was juat sure not to take any of my pain meds for at least 8 hours.... yesterday I drove around town for a couple hours .... just take it slow... not to ride anyones ***... just be sure you have plenty of stopping distance.... you should do fine.. You could even practice a few times around the block... just to be sure ... GOOD LUCK

driving after 1 week???? crazy?
Oh this was a big issue for me. I had my mom around to drive me, but that was worse than anything I can imagine. Just pulling out of the driveway she must have hit the brakes 5 times. Do you know what that feels like? Here is the big issue you have to consider. Insurance. If anything happens it really won't matter who is at fault. You are not cleared to drive by your doctor and your insurance co will not cover you. (That's what I was told here and by my dr's office). I was also warned that what if you had to slam on the brakes---would you be able to? What sort of damage would that do to you? These are just some things to consider. I hated the fact that I couldn't drive, but I did listen to my sisters here and gave in. No driving till dr clears you.

driving after 1 week???? crazy?
My doctor cleared me after 10 days, but I decided to listen to the "Sisters" and wait till week number 4, which is next week. The advice I get here always seems more sound than my gyn's advice...she's a "superwoman" and darn proud of it. I'd rather be safe than sorry!!!!

Another aspect of this discussion
Many insurance companies will not cover you for at least a two week period after surgery, as many of the pain medications and anesthics they use in the hospital take that long to get out of our systems.

driving after surgery
my doc said, ok to drive myself to see her after one week of surgery, had the hub do it anyway, but doc said, it seems to be an old,old restriction only because of the days when cars were not easy to stear and could effect your incision. she said now cars are so easy to drive that it really isn't that bad. That would also be if you were not on any meds too.. but old concern was because of steering wheel, and power steering weren't that easy. so.. take it from there...ola..
