Can you drink liquids right after surgery

Can you drink liquids right after surgery do you feel thirsty?

I had a breathing tube during my surgery (which I think is standard) and my throat was VERY dry and I had a raspy voice for the first 24 hours. They gave me ice chips for the first few hours after I got back to my room and my husband fed them to me. I had alot of nausea from the anesthetic, so even the ice chips were hard to swallow. They gave me a shot for the nausea and it worked great. Then I ate some jello and drank some sprite. It worked out fine. Good Luck and Don't worry!!

For several hours after my surgery, all I got was a little "sponge-on-a-stick" thing to put in ice water. I could use it to moisten my lips and I could suck on it and get a little moisture that way.

The next morning (my surgery was in the afternoon), I finally got my first gourmet jello and juice.

I wasn't thirsty until I got to my room as I was so out of it from the anesthesia and pain meds. I had a clear liquid diet (broth, jello, juices) for three days until I passed gas.

I don't know why my experience was so different??

I was given the sponge thingy with water and ice chips while in the recovery room. I was very thirsty and had a dry/raw throat from the breathing tube.

Surgery was 7:30am, and I was in my room by 11:00am. In my room I was given a pitcher of ice water to drink freely. They brought me a chicken cream soup and juice for dinner around 6:00pm and I ate/drank it all. Had a regular diet from the next day on.

I drank 3 pitchers of water before the next morning! No problems at all, great care in the castle - 4 weeks today!

I had a LAVH, and was given gingerale as soon as I was in my room. I had surgery about 11:00 and was in my room about 3:00. I could drink as much as I wanted. Had clear liquid dinner, broth, jello and juice.
