Re: Question about Painful transfer to hospital bed after hysterectomy
Thank you all for your comments. Another experience I had was that my pain pump was removed less than 24 hours after my surgery. The oral pain medication I was given was inadequate and by evening I was in significant pain however my nurse would not contact my doctor because he discouraged them from calling him after office hours. I wanted to leave my room and go to the hospital's emergency room for help but eventually a more experienced nurse took over the situation and called my doctor. I was given additional pain medication and a rectangular pain patch that went above my stomach. I was then able to sleep that
night. I saw my doctor for about 30 seconds early the next morning. It was the only time I saw him during the 4 days I was hospitalized.

That is strange that you had to call your doctor. We have a doctor 24/7 on the floor which they talk to. They never had to call my surgeon for anything..

Question about Painful transfer to hospital bed after hysterectomy
I barely remember my transfer from recovery to my room. I was only semi "with it" but I'm pretty sure this is how they did it for me too. My hubby said I kept saying "just tell me what you want me to do to help" & they kept chuckling & saying "your only job is to be comfortable & recover" I had awesome nurses!

Re: Question about Painful transfer to hospital bed after hysterectomy
I was on a general surgery ward. The whiteboard at the nurses' station listed the docs who were "on call", one for each specialty represented by the patients currently on the ward. That made sense to me as - to give an example - a thoracic surgeon wouldn't necessarily be able give advice regarding a gyn oncologist's patient or vice versa.
I tended to run a slight fever each night. The first time it happened, the nurses called my gyn onc for advice. It was the middle of the night, but he answered because he was the gyn onc "on call" that night.
The day I was released, the "other" gyn onc was on call. (Our province only has two and they're both based at the same hospital.) It was pretty clear that the two gyn oncs had traded notes and that she was already familiar with my case, even though we'd never actually met before.
I felt well looked after and think it's a good system.

Re: Question about Painful transfer to hospital bed after hysterectomy
Your initial post, an open recovery room, no one checking your vitals, not being asked if you were warm & comfortable and a lack of pain medication...... to me, the care you received was completely unacceptable.
I was also hospitalized for 4 days/nights in a Women's Pavillion that was a few years old. The staff there were very caring, professional and I could tell from the minute that I entered the facility. I had also heard from others that they provided wonderful care. As much as I wanted to go home to my own bed, a part of me didn't want to leave because I appreciated the way that my medical needs were being looked after.
I am not sure what to say with regards to your experience, there probably isn't a whole lot that can be done but I would express your feelings to your doctor when you go in for your follow up. I hope that sharing your story with all of us gives you some comfort as well.
Big hugs to you

I can't speculate on your situation as I wasn't there, however if you feel the care you received was not acceptable, you can write a complaint/letter to the hospital

They tried to get me to transfer myself and I refused...too scared. They grabbed the sheets and pulled me over and helped me get comfortable. I too was still pretty groggy at that point.

Wow. I am even more grateful for the superior care I was given after surgery, from the more than adequate pain relief to the kindness of the night staff I couldn't have been made more comfortable--I made sure to congratulate my doctor on how wonderful her staff are--I am so sorry that your experience was so awful!

Re: Question about Painful transfer to hospital bed after hysterectomy
I did the same thing, although my surgery was laparoscopic. They put the gurney up high than the bed and had me slide over. They provided a little guidance but didn't help. My rr nurse was awesome. She was by my bedside from the moment I woke up until I was transferred to my room. Floor nurses not so great!

Re: Question about Painful transfer to hospital bed after hysterectomy
I also think that you should make a complaint. I was on a gyn onc ward, but only saw my doctor once outside of surgery. However, during the 5 days, I was there, I was checked on by other doctors, who all had access to my notes. In fact, because I came in on a Wednesday and had been told I would be staying around 4 days, I was worried that I wouldn't be able to leave until Monday because there would be no doctor to discharge me at the weekend. I was wrong. A doctor examined me and discharged me on Sunday.
Once I stopped getting morphine injections, I was allowed tramadol, and later codeine, up to four times a day, as well as paracetamol (Tylenol). I never had a problem getting medication when I asked for it. The nurses were brilliant. The first time I went to take a walk in the ward, I passed by the nurse's station and the nurse sitting there saw me and said, "Astropuppy, is anything wrong?"
