If a Tree Falls in the Woods?
Hi Ladies,
I know that one of the pre-requisites for leaving the hospital after surgery is passing gas. What I am curious about is if you pass gas while alone in your room do they just take your word for it?

Yes, I've always been taken at my word. It wouldn't make much sense to fib as you would only risk hurting oneself

If a Tree Falls in the Woods?
My nurses and the dr were fine with it. They kept listening to my stomach for gas and movement. I think they pretty much do that now since....
I said "I passed gas nice nurse" and I smiled.
She then said... "I knew you would."
( smiles..) she either heard me .. or... she knew from the sounds of my tummy.

They let me leave without passing gas. However they did listen to my tummy several times a day to check on the bowel sounds.

as long as you have active bowel sounds...that is all that truly matters...some people pass gas in their sleep, so they may never know if it happened

That is so funny! I wondered the same thing. I had read on this site about the very loud gas that some of the princesses pass. I was lying in my hospital bed and had this little bitty "fluff" barely noticable to anyone. I asked the nurse when she came in "How much gas do I have to pass for it to count and do I have to have a witness?" She laughed and said "If you think you passed gas, it counts!"

My husband was my witness (not that I would have needed one). I can truthfully say that if I had to pass gas in front of someone to get out of the hospital I would have... after surgery, there are certain things you just are not proud of (or at least right then). My logic was that they just had done a hysterectomy on me and we all know where they had been, so why should I have been shy about passing gas?

In my case, they also simply listened for bowel sounds. And I don't think I actually passed any gas until I got home.
Also, there was no requirement to have a bm before leaving the hospital -- others have reported not being able to leave until they have one. And it's a good thing I didn't have to stay until I did -- I would have been in the hospital for 7 days after my surgery!

Oh lord. I'm obsessing tonight. It's so good to have you girls to obsess with! I'm having my Op done at a teaching hospital. I just had the most horrible image of having to "light a fluffy" for a group of med students before I could leave the hospital. I'm not a shy girl really, but could you imagine all that pressure??? I'd never get the job done purely out of stage fright!
