Upcoming hysterectomy 7/7: Bikini cut cervix removal dr said about 6 lbs of fibroid

I've been at home on short term disability for a couple of weeks, I have been an emotional wreck over this. I am looking forward to moving past this anxiety of surgey and all the unknown after stuff. Has anyone had the same size fibroid inside their uterus removed with cervix and abdominal not robotic ? I have some questions about if I still will have the same hormone cycle each month just no bleeding or cramping( obvious ) on the cramps etc but will my hormones change ?

Hi Happywife1 -

All of your emotions, feelings and fears are very normal. This is a difficult surgery to digest and contemplate with all of the unknowns afterwards.

I did not have that large of fibroid removed. I had a 1-lb, very large grapefruit sized complex ovarian cyst removed with numerous uterine fibroids. I had a TAH BSO (so I lost everything).

Regarding hormones, if you are not having your ovaries removed than you should cycle just the same as you have in the past, you just will not bleed. Your ovaries can get sleepy for a time without their normal blood flow from the uterus. There also an be issues longer term. Here is an article that may help: Ovary Function after Hysterectomy.

Thank you for the information. At times I wonder if I never found out about the big fibroid would I be better off not fixing things like back pain and clotting ? Am I essentially trading one set of issues for another?

Happywife1-

You can be, and that is what makes this such a difficult choice. You need to weigh the pros and cons of this surgery with your current health situation. You can talk to your doctor about your concerns.

Have you considered getting other opinions? You may have other options. Here are two articles that may provide information:
