14 days TAH/BSO Dense Adhesions

Hello, my name is jackie and I am new here. Tomorrow will be my 2 week anniversary. My TAH/BSO was completed on May 5, 2010. My surgeon stated he has a pretty tough time because of all of the adhesions on my bladder and colon. I did take me almost two days to pee on my own and have not had a bm yet without the assist of 1 fleets enema. But even though the pain has decreased, I continue to have significant pain on my left side. my post op blood counts were 6.8 and 20.0. I am tired and in pain. I feel like a druggy every time I asked for pain meds. Help! I have been taking Norco 10mg every 4- 6 hours. My surgery took 5 1/2 hours due to all of the adhesions on my colon, bladder and in my pelvis. He said everything was just all stuck together. Anyone else with these issues?

Re: 14 days TAH/BSO Dense Adhesions

Hi Jackie, I am 3 weeks post-op. I also had TAH/BSO and my surgery took 5 hours, due to adhesions. Everything was so stuck together, my Dr. wasn't even sure he got both ovaries (he couldn't see one) or that he got my whole cervix until the pathology report came back. I'm also having a lot of pain on my right side.
The first two weeks were the worst for me, now I'm only taking my strongest pain pills (vicodin) at night, but I'm waking up every few hours. When I read posts here, it seems like everyone else is recovering so much faster than I am! I am amazed at women who are posting hours after surgery. I slept (waking up only to push my pain pump button) for about 24 hours after surgery. I didn't feel human again for about 3 days. I still need a nap every day, and a lot of motrin.
I'm not sure I helped you at all, but you helped me by posting this. It helps to know I'm not the only one having a slow recovery.

Re: 14 days TAH/BSO Dense Adhesions

I am five weeks post-TAH today, kept the right ovary. I had the same issues as well. My doctor said it looked like someone threw a wad of bubblegum i nthere and stuck everything together. Fortunately for me, I am recovering without any major issues. I stopped taking the pain meds on day 3 post-op as they tend to constipate you. I have been fine using motrin as needed since then. Also took a stool softener three times a day for the first couple of weeks which was a big help. I found that walking helped as well and took many short walks even if it was just around the house. Just remember, everyone heals at their own rate. Good luck and hope you feel better.

Re: 14 days TAH/BSO Dense Adhesions

Jackie, I as well was "cemented together". I started using a stool softner
which helped alot. My surgery wasn't as long as the rest of you gals,2.5
hrs. I started on vicodin and thought I needed more pain meds, they called me in Darvoset. It constipated me and made me more unconfortable. Been
using Aleve and Tylenol ever since.Could the norco be constipating you?
Are you taking a stool softner? Hoping you feel better soon.

Re: 14 days TAH/BSO Dense Adhesions

I too was "cemented" together. Surgery started as a lap but as soon as my surgeon saw the amount of endo, converted to an open incision, surgery took over 3 hours but she successfully removed everything, now we wait for biopsy results.

I am 11 days post op today, feeling better yesterday and probably overdid things. Didn't take any pain meds before bed, not a good idea and will never do that again. Cramping and pain, up all night. Today I rest!!!

Take care in your recovery, rest and heal well!

Terry,
I noticed our surgeries were the same day. I hope you
rest well today. I've been taking Tylenol and Motrin pm
so I can get some sleep. Miss sleeping on my side
and spooning with my DH.
Take Care

Re: 14 days TAH/BSO Dense Adhesions

Hi Jackie, I also had really bad adhesions due to stage 4 endometriosis. My surgery was this past Wednesday, so I'm still really sore. The doctors told me that my case was quite a piece of work....everything was all gummed up in there. No wonder I was in so much pain. The surgery took over 5 hours to complete. I had endo on my intestines, on my ureters, near (or on) my bladder, on my liver (which they did not touch), and all over my remaining ovary. They removed everything but my cervix, because the endo was so close to my rectum and there was a risk of perforation. I still have not had a BM....I was told by my doctor that I have to up my fibre intake and drink more prune juice. If I still have difficulties, I may have to try a stool softener. Hopefully all of this too shall pass! As for pain, she prescribed Naproxen and Tylenol 3's, which seem to be helping.

Sending you hugs. I hope you feel better soon!

Sunny,

I will have to get Motrin PM and try that, thanks for the suggestion. Hope we both heal well and recover soon!

Re: 14 days TAH/BSO Dense Adhesions

Jackie I too had issues with adhesion. I went in for a laproscopic procedure to remove 1 ovary and ended up with a TAH BSO. My doc said she has never seen anything like it and called another OB/GYN in to assist in the surgery. She said everything was just stuck together. I asked her about my bladder and she said she had to use the foley catheter to find the wall of bladder. She also had to have a general surgeon come in to do a sigmoidoscopy to make sure she didn't do anything to my colon. The good news is I had this surgery 9 mos. ago and I am doing great. I feel the best I have in many years. So hang in there the pain gets much less. I won't lie, I still have issues with the incision area but it isn't anything I can't deal with.
