Yikes! I am sick!

Hey, Ladies. I feel like poo-poo! My precious young ones shared their cold and fever with me. My concern is this....

I am scheduled for surgery next Monday. I go for pre-op this Monday. Will they even do the surgery if I have been sick the week before? I also worry if they do my immune system might not be as strong as it could be and I may end up with an infection.

I plan on talking with the doc about this Monday. I am just worried about it and wanted to know if anybody had been in this situation? I don't want to reschedule...it is just so much stress waiting. But, I don't want to end up sick after surgery.......

I was also terrified I'd get sick before my op. (I didn't.) But when I asked about it, the nurse and doc were firm and said if it happens, please let them know and it's no big deal for them to re-schedule a surgery. It happens all the time. So it may be inconvenient for you, but you do want to be at your healthy best before you go in. Just tell them about it at the pro-op appt. and you'll all figure it out.

I didn't feel well prior to my surgery. I was told by my physician that she would go ahead with the surgery as long as I didn't have a fever. fortunately I didn't have one the day of surgery and all went well. I would call your physicians office and see what his/her policy is. I'm sure that different docs have different rules. Good luck! Hope you get to feeling better soon!

Yikes! I am sick!

Hi Angie,
I got bronchitis 10 days before surgery. As an asthmatic, this was not a good thing. I was put on antibiotics & they upped my asthma meds. I was told that as long as I wasn't running a fever & my lungs weren't loaded with congestion, they'd go ahead. My chest x-rays were clear from my pre-op so they went ahead on my scheduled date. I've seen on here a number of times where they'll do surgery if you've been sick as long as you meet the fever & congestion rules. I, also, was under general one other time when I'd had a cold.

Wishing you the best,
Sue

Your doc will do blood tests on you before surgery. If the blood counts aren't right they will more than likely reschedule your surgery. This happened to my friend (she had hip replacement surgery), but I assume it's the same way for any operation.
