Just been told I need a hysterectomy

Hi everyone

I had an endometrial ablation in January and went to see my consultant at the hospital yesterday for my 3 month post-op check. Unfortunately the operation hasn't worked in fact bleeding is just as bad and clotting even worse. My consultant originally thought that I had Andenomyosis but a subsequent MRI scan proved inconclusive and so it was decided we would try the ablation. My consultant now feels that his original diagnosis was probably right and this is why the ablation has failed. I am now scheduled to have a hysterectomy on 5 September. I'm keeping my ovaries and will hopefully have a vaginal operation but because my womb is enlarged and I've never had children, I may need to have an abdominal instead - I guess I won't know until I wake up after the surgery? I've been a member of this site for a few months now, just in case things came to this and I've found it very friendly and informative. Guess you'll be seeing a lot more of me now!

Just curious to know why they are waiting until September for your surgery? That's 5 months away!

Welcome to the site! Starting a list of questions for your doc now is a good idea. You will be less likely to forget something or repeat something as well.
Glad to have another soon-to-be !

Get a list of questions going - I kept everything in a 3 ring binder.

I was switched mid-procedure -- and was angry and upset; but in the end the 'results' are the same - I am doing great a year later - I also kept ' everything else' via the LSH to SAH procedure... at 47 (almost 48) hormone levels are still high (above 'normal' for my age) so menopause is a ways away... no 'instant menopause' for me and that was a reason for keeping everything. Menopause is a gradual process and hopefully not going from high to nothing will allow it to be easier for me. There ARE valid reasons to take the ovaries, but IMO if they can be left safely then you leave them and only take the 'offending' body part. JMO

Thanks for your replies. To answer jade_rose's question about keeping my ovaries; well I'm 45 and they are still working well, so I don't want to have to have HRT - I think I've got a few good years left in them yet!

In answer to peace2006's question as to why I have to wait for 5 months; well, I live in the UK and although surgery is free here on the National Health Service, there is a waiting list. If you have private medical insurance you can get things done more quickly because you are paying for your treatment in a private hospital. Hope this answers your question.
