Questions for large women about TAH

Hi

I was wondering if there are other big beautiful women out there who have had a TAH and how was your surgery/recovery?? I am worried because they have more tissue to cut through, is it much more risky?? What kind of complications can we have??

I really need some imput, I am really worried that death could be a side effect?? What are the %'s of Larger women surviving TAH"S?? I am sorry but all you beautiful women of normal size, probably won't be able to answer this question!! Thanks anyway

Hi, I am a size 18 and had a TAH four/five weeks ago. I have not had any problems. The first couple of days I had my mom check my incision to be sure it was healing correctly. After a couple of days and the removal of the staples I got to where I could touch it and see if it was healing.

My incision is at the bottom of my roll, and I have to lift it up to be sure it is healing correctly. I do have one spot that is not healing as quickly as the rest of the incision and my doctor has advised that I keep an eye on it. Being that it does not hurt, is not infected, no discharge, and I have no fever he said just to keep a band aid on it until my next appointment.

I have found that using a mirror also helps checking the incision. I try and use this the most as it seems when I lift my roll, is when the incision opens up again.

Good questions. I hope to have no issues as well. I am a large woman as well. My surgery is on the 23rd........so, look for my posts after that and I can shed some light for you. Death? don't think that's a concern.

I have a "fluffy" family member who had a TAH last year. She did well, but did have to watch and have help with her incision. Best wishes!

As on of the "fluffy" ones, I had no issues due to my weight. The doctor who did my second opinion was the only one who made a comment about my weight being an issue and thought my recovery would be slower. My recovery went smooth and I was back to work in 6 weeks instead of the 8 the second opion doctor thought.

If you are still concerned, I would suggest talking to your doctor. I'm sure he has seen all body shapes and sizes and would be best to put your mind at ease.

I am "chubby" (Size 3X) and my doctor was not worried at all about my TAH. My incision healed very well and it was not nearly as painful as I had imagined.

The only thing I wish I had talked to my doctor more about DVT prevention. I ended up with a DVT in the leg and was back in the hospital for a week. Prevention is the key, I believe.

I am not a small size. Had op 7 weeks ago & saw Dr last Thursday & he said my recovery was going really well considering I had some ticks against me...diabetes, weight, sleep apnea (we forgot arthritis) Prepare yourself before op by checking up with all your Drs .See if they all agree & if anything needs extra care.This can help your post op. Also post op, do as your Dr says, rest heaps, Keep wound dry &clean.Don,t worry when you sleep a lot..your body is healing. Best wishes with your op. Hear from you after op

I to am "fluffy"....no one even mentioned my weight to me. My incision is vertical from the belly button down...had 22 staples (which really don't hurt when they are removed either). So far recovery has been about the same as or better than things mentioned here. Next week is my 6 week check and hoping for a release to go back to work even if part time for a few days. Still get tired and you will know when to stop and rest. Dr. said listen to your body!! Hope all goes well for you. I think I was more an emotional wreck than anything else, but they give good drugs to relax you

My gyno sent me to a specialist because of my weight. She told me honestly that she would struggle with the surgery, and that the specialist has longer, wider, and more instruments to deal with this. When I met with the specialist, which is an oncology gynocologist...he made me feel right at ease. He said it is a problem for some because of the extra layers of fat to cut thru, but not for him...it's what he does and does well.
So make sure your doctor has no problem with the weight. I was worried about blood pressure and other stuff due to my heaviness, but from reading on here and talking to my surgeon, I know I will be fine. You will be too!! Great questions!!

I am a size 18-20 and I too was worried about this too. Thank you for posting this. I am planning on a lavh but the doc did say she may have to open my belly if she cant do it that way. I worried about the sweat that builds in the fat roll- that cant be good for healing. I would think keeping it dry would be another problem.
