No bowel prep?

I am having a TAH done tomorrow morning, but I don't have to do any bowel prep (other than not eating or drinking after midnight). Is this odd? Have any of you gone through a TAH without having to do bowel prep? I'm wondering if I should call in to make sure something wasn't missed... not that I want to do any bowel prep.

Just curious as to others experiences.

Re: No bowel prep?

I say when in doubt call your doctor. He or she will be the best person to answer your question/set aside your concerns as to prep or not. Personally I had a SAH and did do a prep. I was told it was a precaution in case something was nicked during surgery. Doctors seem to be all different on their Pre op requirements so I would make the call. It never hurts to ask. best of luck to you tomorrow!

Re: No bowel prep?

I had to do one, but both my co-workers did not. I think it's just dr preference. I would call just to check but if they say no, be thrilled. That was not a fun day!

Re: No bowel prep?

I had a TAH/BSO - open abdominal surgery, everything removed, plus pelvic wash in case of stray cancer cells - and I did not do a bowel prep.
I asked, because of this forum, and it seems they are not usually done in this country.

However, be sure you empty your bowels before surgery!! They will not move for a while afterwards. That may be 4-5 days even. So anything in your lower bowel will harden up and be hard to get out. You MAY then need supositories or an enema afterwards as well as the stool softeners they will give you.
I had a BM just before I went to hospital, and I was very constipated when I got going again (day 4)
I think bowel prep. MAY help with that issue, though I suspect that's not why it's done.

Good luck - see you on the other side... on the journey of recovery. We will be there for you, too!

Re: No bowel prep?

I had a tah on 10/11/11 and did have to do a bowel prep--fleet enema. I would probably check with your dr.

Re: No bowel prep?

I had a TAH on 11/18 and did not have to do a bowel prep.

I did make sure I had a bowel movement the night before though.

I asked my doctor about it and he said it was completely up to me whether I wanted to do one or not. I didn't.

Four days after surgery, I had a bowel movement on my own and I did not have to use stool softeners.

Nobody knows your body like you do. Do what you think is best for you, but my doctor told me that it did not make a difference one way or the other.
