migraine after hysterectomy (5 days post op)

Your thread title indicates that your headache is a migraine; in women, they're commonly caused by hormonal fluctuations, which are quite common following a hysterectomy. What happens is that the ovaries go into shock because their main blood supply - the uterine artery - has been severed, and they can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to establish a new supply. In the meantime, one thing that can help is supplementing your diet with magnesium; food sources include leafy greens, whole grains, nuts and seeds, and dark chocolate. What also works quite well for migraines is supplementing your diet with riboflavin; food sources include quinoa, cremeni mushrooms, and skim milk. Also, if you're okay with eating soy, then 1-2 daily servings of tofu, edamame, or soy milk can help with hormonal balance until your ovaries resume normal functioning. Best wishes for your continued recovery!

Re: migraine after hysterectomy (5 days post op)

I ended up with migraines from oxycodone. It took care of all my other pain but left me with a headache that was huge, along with flashing in my vision. When I stopped taking the oxycodone, I felt much better after about 12 hours. I ended up taking 600 mg of ibuprofen along with 200 mg of acetaminophen for the pain after that. It worked fine and my head felt fine too.

Re: migraine after hysterectomy (5 days post op)

thanks ladies. I stopped pain meds and seem fine. Ive tried sleeping off the headaches...yes, most of the time they feel like migraines. Im doing everything I can to eat as my appetite is not all there yet. I now take gravol (nausea meds) every 4-6 hrs and acetaminophen. Im hoping if its med reaction this will help. Or my Chiropractor will help if its a neck issue.

Its neat how overies can have this effect on a body. And funny how Drs have not warned me of this effect. Im hoping it will be a short time for them to wake up if that's the cause.

I did some research (also will speak with the surgeon)

"hysterectomy and migraines"

Other women beware. They can be bad. With I was worned about this (everything else about the surgery went great) ecept feeling my stitches and these headaches/migraines.

Re: migraine after hysterectomy (5 days post op)

I had migraines before menopause that were hormonally related and was thrilled to go through menopause! No more migraines!! Following my LAVH due to uterine cancer, I have had a couple migraines. Even though I had gone through menopause, my ovaries were still producing some estrogen, but now, no more estrogen. So that is one reason migraines occur. I haven't had one in a week or so, hopefully they won't occur often. I have prescription for Immitrex should I get another. Good luck to you! The migraines were the worst part of my recovery!

Tagamigi, Did you have an epidural as partbof your anesthesia? Those can cause headaches. I was offered a spinal for additional pain relief but I refused it knowing it could cause migraines. Hope you are feeling better now.
