Hidden Ovary

I have a fibroid on a stalk outside the uterus that is preventing an ovary to be felt by my gynecologist or seen on the last ultrasound that I had. How serious is this? What further tests can be done? I have heavy bleeding and many other fibroids and this new one blocking my ovary is causing pain sometimes. My gyn says that blood test for ovarian cancer is not all that accurate (gives many false positives, etc.). My gyn says if I don't do anything he wants to examine me in 3-4 months and will do another ultrasound every year but that still leaves an opening of what if? He said if I was his wife he would say go ahead and do the hysterectomy just because of the remote chance of ovarian, but on the other hand he says I have done so well, been able to manage as I am doing. So I am at a loss what to do? I really want to do all (hysterectomy) or nothing. I have at least 7 fibroids, two very large ones, an enlarged uterus and the usual heavy periods and I'm sick of this hanging over me. I just want to feel really justified for having a hysterectomy....some people give you this horrified look when you say you're considering having it done. I'm 48 yo and not attached to my uterus but worried what might happen without hormones (he would leave an ovary in if possible because I probably should not be on estrogen due to a tendency to have clots) and I'm also worried if I would have more or less headaches (I get the bad kind during my period).

THANKS for listening,
Leenie

Hi Leenie...

I have a family history of blood clots and my Dr. has me taking one 325 mg asprin every other day to keep the blood thin. The enzyme for blood clotting is actually produced by the uterus, so without the uterus many women do take asprin at their Dr.`s approval.

Here is a link on fibroids for you.

I hope this helps answer some of your questions.

Dear leenie,

Hysterectomy is major surgery, and you owe it to yourself to get 2 or 3 medical opinions before making a decision. Only YOU must live with your pre-op symptoms and your post-op results (good or bad).

Do some research here & on the internet. Get smart about your symptoms and your options, and make the best choice for YOU.

Sending cyberhugs
