Choosing a doctor?*
O.K. this might seem silly, but I couldn't find any info on choosing a doctor for hysterectomy. My ObGYN is a guy I have been to 1 time before for an annual and now he has evaluated my symptoms and sure enough my uterus is falling out (stage 3-4). But... does every OBGYN do hysterectomy? Is there a difference in level of expertise? What questions do I ask? I dont want to offend this doctor, but I barely know him, and there must be some way to choose the very best doctor for the procedure. Or, is this something they all do well??

It's not silly at all! If he is a good doctor, he won't be offended at all, if you ask him questions such as whether he will preform the surgery, how experienced he is with this type of surgery, etc. And you can always check him out online. Is your doctor in a practice with other gynecologists? Perhaps one of them would have more experience you'd feel better about if your doctor's doesn't meet your comfort level. Then you can check out hospital affiliations, etc....hope this helps!

Not silly at all! You need to ask questions and you need to be comfortable with the answers you are given!! This dr is going to be cutting on you - you want the best!! Do you have any girlfriends that have had this procedure and who did they go to or if you work with lots of guys - have their wives or girlfriends had this done and if so, by who? As cremebrulee suggested - how experienced is he with these? Also, listen to your gut! Do you like him, does he give you the feeling that he is a good dr. What about his bedside manner (although you can give a little here is you learn he is top notch - not really an excuse, but if she/he's "GOOD" then you can let bedside manner slip a notch) You OWE it to YOURSELF to find out about his skill/experience/etc. If he's talking laparoscopic - how often does he end up having to go to an open case? Lastly, if he's offended by your questions or won't take the time to answer them - FIND SOMEONE NEW!! It's your body, it's your money and it's all about YOU so find someone who's interested in YOU! Good luck!!

Re: Choosing a doctor?*
MOST IMPORTANT: Is the doctor BOARD CERTIFIED. Board Certification requires the physician to continue to study and perfct his "craft". Board Certification is not given lightly and physicians who are Board Certified are required to test to keep their certifications current.
Also, check with the hospital where you will be having the surgery, is he a resident, just have privileges, mention his name, watch for the reactions of the staff members, body language speaks volumes.
Good luck!

Re: Choosing a doctor?*
Thanks everyone for the help! My girlfriends and family have not had a hysterectomy, so no help there. I guess I would thought that each OB would have to go through special training or become a specialist for pelvic floor surgery(hysterectomy included) Is this such a routine surgery that any and all OB/GYN doc can do it? Any person I talk to says that their OB/GYN did the surgery and they did not"shop around" In fact, I have called several OB docs and the staff said the doctors don't do the surgery unless your a patient. I'm still confused, but at least I have a starting point.
