ovarian mass
Hi sisters!
I'm fairly new here, been reading your posts for a couple of weeks now gaining alot of knowledge. I admire your strenghs and how you care about one another.
My surgery date is 1-05-04. At present time the plan is to remove only left ovary. I will know when I wake up if more is removed. I told my GYN he could take it all.
I was just kind of wondering if anyone was similar to me- That's
why I've don all this reading. I am 48, no period since Jan 03.
when I had an apendectomy. Extreme fatigue for a year prior.
Weight started coming on- little at a time, I've always been a small person and now 35lbs heavier all around my middle. I find it hard to breathe! Had alot of stomach problems and Drs had a look inside in July. Gave me GERD meds. My PCP wanted my gallbladder out. Surgeon said No. They can't seem to find where
my elated liver enzymes are coming from.
Then in Nov- I doubled over from pain in pelvic, lower back and legs. Did US and showed 7.5 adnexal mass. Was sent to GYN- he
said it was even larger 2 wks later. Now another 2 wks my PCP
says it's going to be a football. CA-125 was 15. I know that's good news-
By the way my hormone levels indicate I'm nowhere near meno-
pause. The very next day after the prodding I started bleeding like a stuck pig. It was very different with clots, heavy and 9 days.
(After 11 mos.)Never been pregnant-never BC. Sorry this is long.
Anyone else similar? Thanks for the knowledge from your experiences.
Brenda

ovarian mass
Hi Brenda!
Welcome to Hyster Sisters!
Your story sounds a little like mine. (except for the GERD stuff -- my mass was found on a routine pelvic exam; I had no symptoms of epigastric stuff)
I was swept off to ultrasound where they confirmed an ovarian/adnexal mass about 12 x 8 x 6 and I was in surgery the following week. Everything happened so fast!
My doctor was concerned about cancer (even though I have no family history of it) and did a TAH/BSO. He said the tumor was really "ugly"..... (how dare he!? )The path report showed fibroid uterus ("multiple -- too numerous to count") and "severe adenomyosis," too. I had sort of put myself in the 'asymptomatic' category, as I thought all that bleeding and pain and migraines were 'normal'. Silly me. It took nearly 4 weeks for them to finish passing my tumor specimen around the country to get second and third opinions, but they finally decided it was an "atypical" mass, precancerous. I did not have to go through any treatments.
I think your plan is a good one; to only plan on removing the affected mass/ovary. If everything else is healthy, I think you're smart to have them left alone. (just my opinion)
I hope all turns out well with your surgery! Please keep us posted on your progress!

Brenda,
I have had some similarities to yours in that I put on some weight in my abdomen the last few months, had been put on GERD medication, and finally had an adnexal mass discovered that was complex and 20 cm in size. The doctors thought it was an ovarian cyst. My CA-125 was normal, as were all other blood tests. However, I didn't have pain or any change in my periods, even though I was/am in my late forties. It turned out that I had a rare benign peritoneal cyst, that when removed, made me realize what was causing my more frequent urination and small bladder capacity at that time.
One thing I would mention to you, though, is that if you tell a gynecologist that he/she can "take it all," he/she probably will. Have you researched and read up enough to be comfortable with that decision should that occur?
Take care.

ovarian mass
Hi, new here, wonderful site, very informative. I have been diagnosed with 5cm(?)adnexal mass on left ovary, 51 years old, no children, taking low dose of HRT, Dr wants to do a total hys, including cervix.(She said as long as I'm in there, I might as well, and take out appendix, too). Any info would be helpful, ah yes, she is doing the CA125 test as I type. This has come up so suddenly, I am having trouble
digesting it all. Please, any info would be helpful. Many thanks, Jeanne jsdjeanne@hotmail.com
