Sudden severe depression/anxiety 24 days post hysterectomy and I HAVE MY OVARIES

I am 24 days post op (abdominal surgery, but KEPT MY OVARIES) and woke up this morning feeling like I just want to cry hysterically or run away. I am normally a very strong person. I do have a lot going on in my life that would make a person be depressed or anxious, but the normal me can usually hold it together. This morning, I woke up with everything wrong in my life weighing so heavy on me that I can barely function. I am sitting here fighting back tears and the urge to get in my car and drive far away.

My ovaries were not removed, so instant menopause isn't the problem. Anyone else have this happen? The sadness I am suddenly feeling is debilitating this morning.

Could you possibly be suffering from a bad case of PMS? If you kept your ovaries you will still be having cycles. The other thing it could be is that your ovaries are a bit shocked and haven't quite got going again after the surgery. It is a huge operation and does take time to recover from both physically and mentally. Take care, Cathy.

Massive hugs to you. The first thing I thought was where abouts are you in your cycle? If you are around the time your period would have been due, that could be the cause? I know that doesn't really help, but hang on in there - you've had a major thing done, and your body/emotions are still finding their balance xxxxxxxxxx

((((((hugs)))))) this is not an easy surgery to recover from and if you add in other factors of your life that are not "in sync" then I am not surprised! Cut yourself some slack and accept this sad day and that tomorrow will be better (((((((hugs))))))

Sudden severe depression/anxiety 24 days post hysterectomy and I HAVE MY OVARIES

I feel your pain and know exactly how you're feeling. I had a TLH and kept my ovaries. Around week three began feeling very anxious anxiety overwhelmed and occasionally very emotional. I thought it was losing my mind. I went to the doctor and they did some blood work and my estrogen was low. The doctor didn't want to do anything about it like hormone therapy yet as I have read sometimes ovaries going to shock after surgery and aren't working properly. so they basically told me to wait it out. I got a prescription for Ativan, but never used it. I did start taking evening Primrose oil and around week four started feeling much better. Not sure if it was from the evening Primrose oil but I also felt some pains in my side like ovulating and breast became very tender. I was so excited I was really hoping that my ovaries have come alive!! If I was you I would go to the doctor and have some blood work drawn, even beyond the hormones, Thyroid function as it could alter after surgery as well and give you feeling the same symptoms. I have read on here often to hang in there it gets better, and I'm just starting my sixth week and truly can say it does get better!
I go soon for repeat blood work, will be interesting to see if my levels are up!

Re: Sudden severe depression/anxiety 24 days post hysterectomy and I HAVE MY OVARIES

Great answers from all my "sisters" above. I am at day 16 post-op of a da vinci assisted LAVH, had my ovaries removed during surgery, but I had gone through menopause appox. 10 years ago so I didn't expect any hormonal issues, yet I woke up yesterday in the same funk you describe. I am in complete agreement with the ladies above. This IS major surgery no matter how easy a time we have had up until now. And I'm also coming to realize how much it impacts us all not only physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. So please don't be too hard on yourself, if you are having a 'bad day'. If anything re-dedicate yourself to pampering... go back to bed with Lifetime movies or a good book and just drink plenty of the magic elixier... water. Tomorrow is another day.
