To keep or not keep cervix?

Hello,
I was recently scheduled for a total hysterectomy (daVinci). I have fibroids that have continued to grow even after a Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) about 4 years ago that was performed to stop the hemorraghing and give me time to think about my options.

My doc is stating that he recommends removing the cervix during the hyterectomy as there is no need to keep it. He plans to remove the uterus through my vagina, and keeping the cervix would extend the surgery because the uterus would need to be sliced up and removed through the incisions instead. He mentioned that this might not be possible because of the prior embolization. Has anyone else had the same procedure and advice? I haven't asked him yet why the prior UFE would present an issue.

Thanks!

Re: To keep or not keep cervix?

Hi Abby141 -

I cannot speak to the UFE issue and your cervix.

Some doctors recommend keeping your cervix, and some say it should be removed. And the internet is full of conflicting information on the subject, and whether removing the cervix is bad for the pelvic floor. I lost my cervix - I did not have a choice - and I have had no issues.

If you keep your cervix there is a chance you can have mini periods. Just talk to your doctor about the pros and cons, given your specific conditions.

Re: To keep or not keep cervix?

Hi Abby, I had a UFE a few years ago also and a hyster recently. I wanted to keep my cervix but the surgeon said he would remove it. He didn't really give me a reason. He was an oncologist and everything happened really fast because I had a huge ovarian cyst they thought might be cancer. So I didn't have time to argue to keep my cervix. But so far no problems, I'm 17 weeks post op now. My uterus had calcified fibroids from the UFE and new fibroids! Good luck!
