colon protruding from vagina
You need to get to an emergency room.......ASAP.....for many reasons. If things are as you describe, your life is at risk. They are required, by law, to treat you there...... regardless of lack of finances.
Please go. Come back here and let us know, OK?......... s....Deb

colon protruding from vagina
Thank you ladies so much for your replies. I had thought about going the ER route and explaining the situation to them. I am just so afraid of another surgery because I feel like I have been butchered by this one. Plus, I am not only a single mom raising 3 kids but I am also a full time college student, trying to get my education so I can have a good career. I am in the middle of the Fall semester and there is no way I could have any surgery right now, even if I felt comfortable with going under the knife again. The earliest I could do anything surgery wise is during Winter break in December. I only hope things won't get worse between now and then.
As far as how I know it is my colon and appendix. Unfortunately it is very obvious. Look at any human anatomy book or web site and look at the colon. At the end of the colon is the appendix which looks like a worm(sort of) and that is what I have hanging out. The entire appendix and about the first 2 "segments" of my colon.
I told my mom I would just rather they sew my vagina shut to prevent any further prolapse than to have anymore surgery. Atleast with that they could do it with a local anesthetic. I am so terrified of anymore surgery. I mean when I woke up from my hyster. I could not even walk. I don't know what they might do to me next time.
Just keep me in your prayers. I have 3 little ones depending on me and I want to make sure I make the right decision about this.
Thanks,
Kim
p.s. by the way I am in GA.

Kim--I just wanted to say you are in my prayers and my heart goes out to you. Only you know what's best for you in this situation but if surgery is what's going to keep you alive to continue to care for three little ones than please consider all your options. I'm no doctor but I can't imagine this is safe to have your organs outside of your body--just the possibilities of organ damage, infection, etc..is mind boggling. Again--my prayers are with you. Keep us posted!

I can't add much else in the way of advise. I agree that you need to be checked out by a dr. Either go to the ER, see your old dr. or pick a new one but please go ASAP. I don't care what is sticking out your vagina, It is not normal and needs attention. I'll be keeping you in my prayers.
Hugs,

colon protruding from vagina
Hi,Hippychick, Its hipchik here!!!! Anyway, I feel your pain. I was also afraid of new surgerys cuz when I had my gall bladder out many years ago, it was a terrible experience. Then I started getting "feminine" problems. I was so scared to have a hyst I avoided it for years. I practally talked myself out of one. And my obgyn at the time, said I would "outgrow" my problems[the usual heavy bleeding, clots, fbroids and anemia] wth the onset of menapause. Well, witht these kind of problems THERE IS NO MENAPAUSE. You just bleed till u have a hyst. Anyway, I had an ablation several years back. I was scared to be put out so I asked for a spinal. It numbed me from the waist down, but mentally I could not handle it so I had the anesthia dr put me out. So the moral of the story is...You have to do what you have to do. Why should u suffer like this. By the way, the ablasion didn't work. I will be thinking about u hippy, keep use posted.

I understand your fear.
However, your reasons for not heading into an ER now do not matter, really. You will not finish school, you will not have any kind of career and your children will not have a Mom if you are dead.
Sorry to be so blunt, but an appendix hanging outside of your body is a life-threatening condition if not treated immediately...........NOT in December.
Take care, please. Demonstrate to your children how a woman takes care of herself.................. s....Deb

(((Kim)))
I just want to add here, you can always go and find out just what you are dealing with and exactly what the dangers are and your options. Then you can decide what you will do from there.
I don't know if a pessary would work when things are this far advanced but some women do use them and avoid surgery for a time.
You need to be wise here, even if it is inconvenient.
You won't know until you go and ask. Then at least you will be making an informed decision. Please listen to the counsel being offered here. This is potentially very serious.

This is very troubling.
Here is a link to a diagram of the normal anatomy of the GI tract:
http://training.seer.cancer.gov/ss_m...omy_fig02.html
The appendix is a 5-10cm finger-like projection dangling off the end of the cecum, which is the area where the small intestine joins the ascending colon. What doesn't show in that diagram is that the whole affair is covered in peritoneum, which holds it all in place. And, in some of us, it's also held tight by adhesions from prior surgeries. The point is, it doesn't tend to be floating around freely in there.
In order for the appendix to be hanging outside one's body, the vaginal cuff would have to be completely torn open, and the cecum, and probably part of the small intestine as well, would have to be hanging out of the body. This would be quite shocking and dangerous, and I imagine it would be very difficult to walk in that circumstance. One could also not wear underwear or pants. Infection would be a virtual certainty, and could easily prove fatal unless emergency surgery were performed and IV antibiotics used right away. I do have a hard time imagining how the web of "stuff" holding the cecum in place would allow it to drop that far.
I would think, if the vaginal cuff had torn, there would have been a substantial amount of blood involved -- was this the case? Is it possible that it's actually a vaginal vault prolapse, and you're seeing a finger of scar tissue (vaginal adhesion) hanging out rather than the appendix and cecum? This would still be a dangerous condition, and would need immediate attention, of course.
Based on the description given, I'd urge you to get to an ER immediately and get it taken care of, regardless of finances. An ER cannot turn you away for not having insurance or enough finances if it's truly an emergency situation.
s,
-Linda

It does sound like vaginal vault prolapse or prolapse of some sort to me too. You would be very ill if your colon and appendix were on the outside of your abdomen. The colon can push on the walls of the vagina, but if it actually went through your cuff you would be in deep trouble. I would definately go get checked out quickly, insurance or no.
I did have a rather large polyp of granulation tissue on the anterior wall on the vagina (that did look quite similar to an appendix.) It was a simple fix of snipping it off and some cauteration of silver nitrate.
Let us know how you are doing. Please take care of yourself and feel well!
