Southbeach Diet during recovery-Any thoughts?
I have been reading all the tales of woe from sad sisters who have gained weight after TAH and it got me to thinking...I have been on the Southbeach diet for about 6 months (now on the maintenance phase). I am very proud of the shape I'm in now, and it was hard work getting where I am. (I can actually hold my head up when in public in a bikini!) My TAH is tentatively scheduled for 2nd week in October. It would be SO disheartening to undo all that hard work I went through to get where I am. I know I won't be able to do my tai-bo exercises, and will only be walking for several weeks post-op. Any thoughts or suggestions on whether I should attempt to limit my diet to the low-carb, low-fat Southbeach phase I or II during recovery? Or is it wiser to eat what my body craves in order to keep up my strength? I just don't know what to expect, except I know my energy level will be next to zero for awhile. Then again, I don't want to go crazy with just eating everything in sight. Let me know your thoughts, Sisters!

Southbeach Diet during recovery-Any thoughts?
Ive been on the South Beach Diet for 8 months and have lost 80lbs. Sort of think of this big belly as a booby prize. Going in this morning for surgery but curious about the same thing. Alot of work already put into this weight loss and still have at least 40lbs to go. Dont want to get off now. Have been eating anything that I could stomach for the last month or so due to difficulty eating and havent lost anything this month. Too small of amounts and my body went into "save" mode.I want to get back on track after surgery but sure dont weant to jeapordize my recovery. I will try to remember to ask doc about it but wont see much of him except in operating room. Im only staying one day due to no insurance and have only talked to him three times in the last three months that Ive been trying to get this done with.

Southbeach Diet during recovery-Any thoughts?
I would talk to your doctor first, and see what he recommends. When they discharged me, they told me that I needed a high protein diet and general well balanced meals...they said that good nutrition is one of the keys to healing.
I had lost 30 pounds and 3 dress sizes prior to surgery by going to my local tan and tone and dieting with my doctor's advice. I had worried about gaining weight. It's been 13 days since my surgery, and so far I haven't gained a pound. I've been eating like the doc wants me to. So far so good...and swelly belly set in at day 5...was gone by day 7, I think after I drank lots and lots of water to help cleanse the tissues there ( according to the nurse).
Good luck!

Southbeach Diet during recovery-Any thoughts?
Hi There!
I am not on South Beach (although it was one of my options...I have a great doctor who treats insulin resistance/weight gain/PCOS with a combination of medicines and diet), but I do a low-sugar (And certainly very little refined sugar). You wouldn't believe how sugar impairs healing. I say keep going with it (Although I'm not familiar with the particulars), but the veggies and protein, and measured amounts of complex carbs, will do wonders for your healing. Sugar just slows it down, causes yeast, makes you tired, etc.
HOWEVER, I've found that after surgery, you kind of have to give your body what it asks for. If it wants crackers, give it crackers (you may need them in the early days to take meds)...if it wants Sprite, give it Sprite...cut yourself a break and let your body have what it wants for the time being. In my personal experience, I have always lost weight during the postop period, I think because your body works so hard to heal. When that walk around the halls makes your heart pound, that can be your workout.
I have gotten really off track with my diet program because of the symptoms that are leading me to this hysterectomy, I haven't gained any, but I've stopped losing (and I really need to lose like 80 pounds), so I'm really looking forward to my postop life as a fresh start, though I will have to start all over again.
While I'm here, any thoughts on South Beach? Is it managable to do in the maintenance phase? I just don't have time to do a zone-like diet...measuring exact amounts, etc. It seems like it has all the benefits of an Atkin's type diet, but much less restrictive and more common sense. Any thoughts?

Southbeach Diet during recovery-Any thoughts?
Hi Fellow South Beacher!
I'm just 6 days post op and had all of your fears about the weight gain going into this. Now that I'm on the other side, however, I'm following my Dr.suggestion and eating a variety of good foods in moderate amounts from the list he gave me before I came home.
The list looks alot like what I was eating on SB! I'm not too picky about the carbs right now, but am not going overboard. I'm more careful about getting enough protein to help the muscle tissue knit together nicely. My DH even brought home a salmon filet yesterday, "Just for you, honey." I thought it was so sweet! And just when I was sure he didn't get it!
I was doing Curves and lovin' it before I found out I had to do this. The general muscle tone and strength has been a great help in my recovery. Especially in the pain department. My only other surgery was a c-section years ago when I was quite unfit, so I can really tell the difference this time! My 'injured' abdominal muscles have quieted down quickly compared to before.
The bottom line is always to check with your Dr., but since SB was designed by a cardiologist and a nutritionist and you're on maintenance, it will probably be okay. But don't take my word for it. Ask Your Doc!
Best of luck! Let us know how you make out. We're cheering for ya!

Southbeach Diet during recovery-Any thoughts?
Dear Happygo -
I have had great success with the Southbeach diet. Only challenge for me was that I hate seafood of any kind. Of course, the book is loaded with recipes involving some type of fish. But I just went thru all the recipes, picked out the ones that sounded good to me, and from then on, it was trial and error. THere is now a cookbook with additional recipes, too. I ditched the dishes I didn't care for, and used the ones I liked. The first 2 weeks (Phase I) is a little difficult to stick to, but that's where you see the most dramatic results. I now simply modify the diet to suit my tastes, and occassionally, I fall off the wagon and have a really bingeful day, but it really doesn't hurt, if you get right back to being sensible. I have found it pretty easy to live with on a permanent basis. Recommend it highly. (p.s. one caviat: don't try the fake mashed potatoes made w/colliflower - its gross).

Southbeach Diet during recovery-Any thoughts?
i was concerned about this too.. i have PCOS and the doc put me on strict Atkins last summer. I have lost 65 pounds so far!
I asked about it at my appt and he told me to go to the maintenance phase for a couple of weeks after surgery. I am insulin resistant (Part of the PCOS) so I have to refrain from eating sugar and Flour anyway. He did mention about how protien and Good carbs (Fruit and veggies) will help me in recovering. But after the 2 weeks, and he sees my progress, he will put me back on the OWL part of the program again!

Southbeach Diet during recovery-Any thoughts?
i was so interested in seeing this topic! i have been on south beach for about 4 months now b/c i am "along for the ride" with my hubby who needed to lose about 50. he's lost 22, i've lost 8 and would be happy to stay where i'm at. then panic at the stories about gaining weight, not only b/c of the surgery but just b/c of menopause. do you notice that women in meno seem to say it viciously almost, like, YOU'LL be FAT soon, TOO! hahaha. anyway i plan on sticking to this diet like forever b/c i think it's so healthy. my hubby and i went off it for the weekend b/c we took a trip and are back on track today and feel really good about it. best of luck, i say eat healthy, treat yourself if that;s what you REALLY need that day (like, i will die if i don't have an M&M, go for it). and God Bless!
