Hi,

Welcome to Hyster Sisters!

I don't have any back problems, so really can't answer your question, but I did want to stop by and give you some s and bump this back up so someone will see it who might have some answers for you.

Best wishes on your upcoming June surgery!

Thank you Shashi

Thank you for replying to my message. I'm a little slow about being anxious over surgery. I'm sure that by the time I go for Lab work and all the Dr. goodies I'll wake up to the real world. I was reading one night and had read something to do with back pain and Hysterectomy. What a relief it would be to find a connection. Well thanks for reading.

(((lizalece)))

Sorry to hear you have back pain. What type of hysterectomy are you having? Abdominal, vaginal, or Laproscopic? As for back pain after surgery, yes I had it and I didn't have any problems with my back. Because I had a vaginal hysterectomy they had me on the table with legs up. I've read on here certain postions they put you in for the vaginal one's can be quite different and make us uncomfortable after surgery. Additional info at this link. https://www.hystersisters.com/vb2/sho...threadid=33913 Please don't go to pelvicfloor website listed at that link. The pictures there are very graphic and not for the weak stomach. I actually had hubby look (he's a nurse) at it before my surgery though so he understood what kind of help I was going to need and be there for me.

In an abdominal hysterectomy a supine (flat on back) position is used. Make sure everyone knows about your history of back problems so they are extra careful in the O.R. with your back.
Sometimes I have heard sisters that had backpain found the cause to be related to the gyn problems and felt better after surgery.

I've had three epidural injections and one facet(joint) injection done under x-ray by pain management dr. for some herniated discs in my neck and they helped greatly. I had severe pain that went across my shoulder, down the arm, in my wrist, and had numbness in my hand. I was told the epidural injection would help get me to not take so many needed pain meds and the additional facet injections would relieve the inflammation of the facet joints. I'm actually down to one to two pain pills a day if needed. I would do the epidural injections again if needed.

To be honest...I'd rather go through another hysterectomy than what I went through with the chronic and severe pain in my neck. The hysterectomy was a piece of cake but I did have to take it easy and allow my body to heal. We only have one chance to heal right after major surgery.

Make sure the dr., anesthesiologist, and nurses know about your pain meds. You may be "tolerant" to certain pain meds and they may not work as well for your pain so you may need something stronger. For me if I take a vicodin or roxicodone I don't get high but if I took the pain pill and didn't have pain I would feel loopy. The nurse explained to me that the reason I don't get "high" on the pain meds is because I'm in pain. My body built up a tolerance to the pain meds. For my TVH, I had an epidural (ask your pain mgt dr. if that would be ok for post op pain) and I had absolutely NO pain from the surgery but I did have some back pain that lasted for a few days after surgery from laying on the table in the O.R.
