Did you get a second opinion?
I did get a second opinion. The Ob-Gyn I had my kids with passed away from breast cancer several years after my last child, so I went to another female Ob-Gyn in my area. I didn't really know if I liked her or not but at that point I had no problems and went for my yearly paps. When I did have problems, I didn't like the way she handled them or me. First of all when she took a endometrial biopsy, she didn't even tell me what she was doing and she hurt me worse than I have ever felt. I was sweating and amost passed out on the table and her and the nurse LEFT me to get dressed. So there I am, spread eagle and having a hard time keeping myself together and they left me! Never again! I called her 10 days later (had my gallbladder out in meantime) just to see what the lab results were and her recommendations. She wanted me to try IUD. No way! 2nd she suggested Provera shot to stop bleeding. No way! 3d. BC pill to stop bleeding. I tried that. Worked for 1 month then bleeding again. I obtained copies of all my lab results from her office and hospital (ER 3 days earlier for severe hemmoraging), found another Dr. that MIL recommended. Loved her. After reviewing my history and various lab results from ultrasound, MRI and biopsy, recommended everything out. Good thing, my ovaries were full of cysts, two of which were holding my very large uterus up!? My other Ob-Gyn didn't even address that issue. I am 16 days post op and feel soooooo much better even with the lingering pain. I also had a TT at the same time, so I am looking very forward to a new beginning!

I did get a second opinion
Hi Ladies,
I did get a second opinion, mainly because I was not at all comfortable with the gyn I had been going to, he told me before he did a biopsy in his office after an irregular pap smear to "relax, you do NOT have cancer", then when the pathology results came back he insisted that it was pre-cancerous, that I must have a radical hysterectomy immediately.
I went to see a surgeon he recommended, again, not at all comfortable with him, he said he only did about 5 radical hysterectomies a year (this was gyn/oncologist), he said I needed a cone biopsy to determine if it was cancer or pre-cancerous, and he wanted to do a radical hysterectomy two weeks after the cone. He also wanted to remove my appendix, just because he would be in there and I "didn't need it". Additionally, I could barely understand what he was saying, his English was not very clear. To sum it up, no one is cutting on me if I can't communicate clearly with them, they want to take out a healthy organ?, also I later found out that the cone biopsy and hysterectomy would have been scheduled much too close together and could have created serious problems with the hysterectomy being performed!
Now I knew I definitely needed a second opinion, two relatives who are physicians suggested I go to a big cancer center not far from where I live. I did, the surgeon did a cone biopsy and d&c and results came back that I had stage 1b cervical cancer.
I am now scheduled to have a radical hysterectomy done 2/11/09. The surgeon is going to try to use the daVinci robot assist, crossing my fingers all goes well and I don't need to go the other route with larger incision.
I have to say this, the two physicians in my family are the ones who gave me the courage to be more pro-active, definitely get a second opinion, I was basically interviewing these surgeons and asking questions that weren't comfortable for me, but were NECESSARY in order for me to make the best choice possible.
So, my second opinion did not change the fact that I needed a radical hysterectomy, but it did change the level of expertise of my surgeon and my confidence in his ability to do what is needed in the least invasive way he can manage.
Wishing all of you the very best!

third opinion, and they all helped
I sought out a second opinion, and then a third to see if there were any other alternatives which would be better for me.
I am so glad I looked at all the options and that I had my trip to the castle.

Did you get a second opinion?
No, I did not get a second opinion. Unless, of course, all the years of seeing doctors that would not help me with my excessive uterine bleeding...if that counts, then I did get a second opinion.

Did you get a second opinion?
No, I didn't get a second opinion prior to having my hyster. I was asked if I wanted one but my gynae and I had decided there was no need as we had already exhaused all other options for dealing with my Endo, DUB, pain etc.

No second opinion
I did not get a second opinion, unless you count the call to my oncologist.
My OB GYN and Oncologist are on the same floor and the GYN had already talked to him about my case- his RX had the negative effect on my uterus.
I was given several options, since this was an endometrial issue, not fibroids/ pain/ etc.
I also trusted the GYN right away, having my daughter and several friends rave about her manner. My husband even liked her style and the way she spent time with me on the phone and in the office.
At the end of the calendar year, I knew I needed to decide and MOVE to make the best use of my high out-of-pocket expense.

2nd Opinion
I chose the hysterectomy. My doctor gave me many choices to stop my bleeding, I bled from Oct. 7 to Feb. 8th the day of my surgery. I was only 28 when I made the decision but I knew it was the right one. I have 2 wonderful boys and 2 wonderful stepsons, so having the surgery was ok for me. And hey 3 years and no period its like having Christmas everyday lol.

Did you get a second opinion?
My GYN told me 15 years ago I would need a hysterectomy, but I would be the one to push the button on when. When I had a cyst burst on my right ovary in November, the wait was over and it was a matter of when I scheduled it. He wanted to do it the week of Thanksgiving, but my daughter was 8 months pregnant and living with me, so I waited until after her delivery and she was released by her doctor. I didn't seek a second opinion, but my GYN did have me see my surgeon, who is one of his partners. They were both involved in my surgery.
