This article says 100% of PMS disappears with oopherectomy and 75% with hysterectomy alone.

How many of you have blessedly lost or reduced your PMS after your hysterectomy even though you kept your ovaries? I'm especially wondering about breast tenderness and headaches.

Ferrin, The important thing to remember is that while PMS goes away with oophorectomy it has been traded in for menopause. Give me the youth of PMS anyday. PMS visits you once a month. Menopause is everyday. This is apple and oranges. There are less radical ways to deal with PMS.

Kept one ovary and both of those symptoms are reduced. That is just for me though. Every one is different.

My mood swings have lessened a bit but they were never that bad anyway. I still have breast tenderness. I never had headaches so can't comment on that. All in all, I'd say nothing much has changed in the PMS department.

The only pms syptoms I have are a mild cramping (very mild) and I would like a pc. of chocolate and a occasional pimple. My pms is almost non existant though I still like to blame my witchiness on pms (it's not pms though). I use to have horrible pms before my surgery.

Hugs and good luck!!!

Hi Ferrin,

I am 18 months post-op and I kept both my ovaries.

I still get mild PMS each month. Usually is breast tenderness and mild irritability at that time of the month. However, I do ~not~ have a period, of course, and I do not get the monthly bloat-weight gain I had in pre-op.

Best wishes,

Mary

Nothing changed in my PMS since surgery. I still get the headaches, breast tenderness and overall tiredness. The only thing that I don't get as before is the pre-period cramping.
