Blood clots..how long do we need to worry??

Hi ladies, I was wondering if anyone had an idea about how long we need to worry about blood clots after surgery? Like in the legs..

Also anyones dr tell them it's ok or good to wear the white emb. stockings they wore in the hospital at home for a week or two to help with this??
Thanks

Blood clots..how long do we need to worry??

My DVT came exactly 3 weeks post op.

A google search revealed this information:

  Quote:
Blood clots — Pelvic surgery increases the risk of developing blood clots in the large veins of the leg or lung. The risk is increased for approximately six weeks after surgery. Medications may be given to some women to prevent blood clots. In addition, women taking oral contraceptives or hormone replacement should ideally discontinue them one month prior to surgery since they can further increase the risk of blood clots. Women who are sexually active and premenopausal should use alternative methods of birth control (e.g. condoms) to prevent pregnancy before surgery.

Those tight stockings they give you to wear in the hospital to keep from getting blood clots. I had those and the inflatable leg things.

What are the signs of a clot in the legs? I keep getting that "tired" feeling in my legs the last couple nights. Like my legs are tired from being on them all day, that feeling.

Blood clots..how long do we need to worry??

Generally, any pain in the legs/thighs should be reported to your doctor; however to have clots in both legs at the same time would be uncommon. My pain was isolated in the middle of my thigh. It was my only symptom before going to the hospital.

You can read my story here:

I hope it helps.

Blood clots..how long do we need to worry??

I don't have any of that well except yesterday, I got a huge intense pain on/in the whole left side of my chest. It was sharp and then it felt like I had a knot in my upper back like about my left shoulder blade. I backed myself against the wall and rubbed it out the best I could. This morning the knot feeling came back but then it went away.(allergies are up and have asthma) Other than that I have a bruise on the back of my left calf with like a knot in it. Its gone way down now and the knot inside is gone. I don't remember hitting my calf on anything, thats the weird part.

Low back pain is common after a hyst but I was told to report any upper back or chest pain as these could be signs of pulmonary embolism. That's not always the case, but it's better to call your doctor and err on the side of caution.
