Can VH end up as an AH?
Hi All, I just signed up today. Surgery is scheduled for 11/25 and will be LAVH with one tube and one ovary removed. The others are already gone. Just wondering if in the case of a retroverted uterus with fibroids, is there a chance it can't be done vaginally? Anyone here wake up with an unexpected abdominal incision? Haven't had my pre op appt yet so maybe that's why I don't know the answers to this. I am trying not to get all worried and want to go through with it but sometimes I absolutely freak!! Anyway, glad to be a member and have enjoyed reading some of the recent posts.

Can VH end up as an AH?
Hi KB,
Welcome to Hystersisters!!
While I'm sorry that you are facing surgery, I am glad that you have posted and introduced yourself to us.
I don't know the odds on a LAVH being turned into a TAH at the last minute, but I do believe that it is a possibility, although a slight one, because if your doctor finds anything that he feels he needs a better look at, he will want to have permission from you to make that decision if it is for the best.
Have you read the pre-op and post-op hints yet? You'll find them in the drop-down menus toward the bottom of the main page (click onto the Princess logo at top left to get there).
And please go back into your profile and enter your date of surgery so you'll be on the calendar for that day and will receive a special greeting from us.

Can VH end up as an AH?
I am scheduled for Nov. 4, and my doctor called the OR to set it up while I was in his office. He scheduled for vaginal/possible abdominal. I'm sure it is individual, but I won't know until I wake up. The most important part is to feel like you are in competent hands, so ask lots of questions.

Can VH end up as an AH?
44pets,
I was scheduled for a LAVH and ended up with a TAH. I knew there was a possibility of this, but my DR sounded pretty sure that he could do the LAVH, so I was surprised when I woke up with an incision. My uterus was 20 week preg size because of fibroids. My thoughts would be prepare for the incision, if it is possible, and maybe you won't have it. I wasn't really prepared for that, so my recovery has been more than I thought it would be.
Ask your DR if he/she thinks a TAH is possible, so you can prepare yourself, because it is a different recovery.

Can VH end up as an AH?
Hi KB
My DR told me the same thing as littleleep's. I'm scheduled for a TVH/BSO Nov. 5th. My DR said if he can't get everything that way he will have to do an incision. Just said to put my hand on my abdomen when I wake up and I will know. I'm hoping for the TVH but keeping the idea that it could possibly turn into TAH. This site is great, you will get alot of encouragement and answers to your questions here.

Waking up with a scar.....
Hi there,
I was told that if there were complications, they could change the procedure...They started the LAVH and found that my bladder was attached to my cervix, and thought it might be some kind of scare tissue, but to be safe they had to go throught the Ab and make sure and do it right. They even called in an oncologist to make sure it wasn't cancer or anything. It really wasn't anything and I am back to as normal as I guess I could be. Everything was clear and I think it was just one of those things, but I just wanted you to know that there is always the possibility...of course this is just my experience. As long as everything is "as expected" I wouldn't be worried about any surprises. If you feel unsettled about aa AH talk with your doctor. That's part of his job.
Good luck, Julie

Thanks for info on VH becoming AH
Hi All, Thanks for sharing. I will definitely find out more from my doctor. If I have an AH I will need more after care and time to recoup before going back to work. Luckily, I work at home so there is no commuting time involved. Just have to walk into the "office". I am planning to only be off for one week and then should be able to at least answer the phone and do some desk work. I am having surgery on 11/25 so the week I am off is Thanksgiving week and should be pretty quiet anyway. Is resting only one week after VH realistic? My paperwork from the doc's office says 4 to 8 weeks but no way can that happen. Any input would be helpful.

Just Remember.......
......that you will have a lot of healing to do internally, and you will still have to rest and take care. Sitting at a desk doesn't seem to be too bad, but it will make you tired, and you shouldn't sit that way for long periods of time. Listen to your body, and no one else except the doctor. Just don't lift things, push and pull things, and all those other little things that are listed for you not to do. Some one had a nice list here on the site, and maybe someone will send it along to you. You might feel good and then you will feel down again. I am almost 3 months out and I still have to pace myself. If I work hard for a day or two, I will have to take it easy the third day. I have to pace my days so that it doesn't build up and take a whole day from me. Of course, mine was AH, but the first two weeks or so, I didn't want to go to the computer. I also work (what little I have to do) from home. I just remember something my Grandmother always said (and it had nothing to do with surgery) when she talked about the "housework" ..........It will all be here when we're dead and gone....
nothing is more important that your recovery.
Take care!
Julie

Can VH end up as an AH?
Hi KB,
I had a TVH, with repairs for a cystocele and a rectocele. I had general anesthesia, and was still on pain pills at one week. I really don't think that I could have concentrated enough to do any work, even at home, for at least 3 weeks, because of the brain that I had (well, sometimes still do).
The list of do's and dont's that Julie is referring to is probably from the post-op drop down menu toward the bottom of the main page of the site. Here's a link to it:
Hysterectomy Recovery No No's
There are lots more very valuable hints found there (and in the pre-op drop-down menu, too). Be sure to check them out.
You'll be in my thoughts and prayers for a successful surgery.
