Large Fibroid / Enlarged Uterus
I am scheduled for a Hysterectomy and bowel reconnect on July 7th. Originally my gyn was going to remove my Uterus and cervix. Now after an Ultrasound and CT scan and other tests she wants to remove my tubes and ovaries. I am 52 and still have regular periods so I haven't entered menopause yet. She said due to my age and tests results that I am not normal and need to have everything removed. I am not to happy about this now so close to my surgery. Anyone have anything similar to this? Any thoughts?

I am concerned about this also, so I am thinking about going for a second opinion.

Re: Large Fibroid / Enlarged Uterus
A second opinion is always a good decision. But also a better conversation with the doctor might be helpful. I know I was told hysterectomy and FREAKED! Call and ask every question you have!! Thats her job P.S. i also have an enlarged uterus and a large fibroid along with heavy long periods. What did the tests show that made her change your surgery?

Re: Large Fibroid ?enlarged Uterus
It was a brief phone conversation between me and the Dr.
She said it was based on statistics and my age for the additional removal of the tubes and ovaries. She also kept stressing that I wasn't a normal case so I shouldn't compare myself to others that were the same age or older
that already had a hysterectotmy. My concern is my family on both sides has a huge history for heart problems. Heart attacks, congestive heart failure and also diabetes. I have an office visit with the Dr. this Friday so I am preparing myself with questions and concerns to present to her as you suggested.

Re: Large Fibroid ?enlarged Uterus
I am not being nosey. But she should be able to explain what she means by,you are not a usual case. 52 doesn't seem old to me.Over 60 maybe. I am 47 and having surgery for similar things. Yes I also have a medical history, family history, etc that makes me different from his other patients. But each patient bring these challenges. She need to explain it in a way you can understand. P.S I was pregnant at 19 and the OB/GYN tried to bulldoze me. I went in with a list of questions...she took the paper from me and said, yes,no,yes, yes,no. and handed it back! I changed doctors

Re: Large Fibroid ?enlarged Uterus
I am sure she will explain more at my visit as I will insist she does. I just called the surgeon that did my first surgery for Diverticulitis and removed some of my colon and gave me a colostomy at that time. He is the one that saw the large Fibroid (said it was the size of a softball) and suggested that when he went back in to reconnect my colon I could have a Hysterectomy since he would have me open abdominally anyway. I am upset and really considering no hysterectomy since I don't have pain and I haven't gone into menopause yet. They also say once you go through menopause the fibroids shrink. His office said they will call me back when he is in tomorrow. I think I will feel better once I hear from him because I trust him.
