Lupron vs. Hysterectomy for possible endometriosis or adenomyosis

I am always in incredible pain, dr "thinks" it's endo/adenomyosis but I haven't had a laparoscopy done yet. Dr recommended to be put on Lupron hormone therapy for 6 months to see if it will take care of the pain. I have been on oral hormones since January and it has not helped at all. If I don't start the Lupron I can opt to have a partial done and have just my uterus taken out since he feels that I am too young (36) for anything else to be removed at this time. I'm scared of the intense hormone treatment and the emotional/mental stress it causes. My husband deploys very soon for a year and feel that this only ads to my emotional concerns. However surgery scares me because I've read that it doesn't always fix the issues with endo? Sorry for rambling...any response is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!!

Re: Lupron vs. Hysterectomy for possible endometriosis or adenomyosis

Why not have the lap to see which it is (adeno vs endo)? If it's endo they can remove it then, and if not then at least you know. Many people on this site seem to love or hate Lupron, with the lover's seeing a lot of relief from endo pain while on it. When you say oral hormones do you mean continous birth control pills so you don't have any periods? I'm sorry they're not helping your pain.

I'm in a similar position to you! Only difference is I have been diagnosed and treated for endo. However I'm still in pain. I had my second I injection of zoladex (same as lupron) today to see if a hyster be the right thing for me to do. No results as yet it didn't stop my period last month and I'm still in pain but hoping it'll work this month. Xx

Yes, birth control pills. I took them for six months. The first set was just progestin and I had a bad reaction to them, so it was changed and the second set was both estrogen/progestin. I was only taking the active pill not the inactive. So periods did stop but the pain did not. Hoping that isn't the case if I do the Lupron shots!

Re: Lupron vs. Hysterectomy for possible endometriosis or adenomyosis

Reading your post is just like being 36 again. My GYN helped me manage my pain with Motrin. That worked pretty well for a year. Then I had an emergency appendectomy on New Years Eve! It was an adhesion. My GYN recommended a lap to diagnoses me. I finally did it at 39. I was very stubborn because I was scared. I was diagnose with severe endo. and took Lupron for 6 months. It helped.
I am now 44 and I just had a total Hyst one month ago.
If I could go back in time and tell myself- the suffering and the risks were not worth the fear, I would.
I will leave you with that.
I would also get a second opinion.

I'm still in the treatment stages of my endo. I'm 37 and I have had 2 surgeries 9 weeks apart to have everything removed. I am in camp "no-lupron". It literally rocked my world. It destroyed my immune system, affected my memory, gave me mind numbing headaches, caused me to have horrible bone and joint pain, made my endo worse and caused adhesions, gave me insomnia, produced hot flashes that literally felt like were coming straight from hell, and caused me to gain 30lbs. After a complete hysterectomy, not even the surgical pain compares with how bad Lupron was. You also have to be very careful where you seek Lupron advice from also because drug reps sneak around in endometriosis forums. I'm sure they smell the class action lawsuits coming down the pipes. I am slowly but surely getting over the affects of the Lupron but honestly if I had it to do over again I would have gone straight to surgery. I had my ovaries removed last week and have yet to experience any hot flash that compares to Lupron. I would literally wake up and cry because I woke up. Life with 4hrs average sleep a night was not for me.

Re: Lupron vs. Hysterectomy for possible endometriosis or adenomyosis

I am new to site but can relate totally to the query... MEC9696 I have just had my first Lupron jab with just two more lined up before seeing Dr again to discuss whether surgical option of hysterectomy should be the next step. I have been diagnosed with Endometriosis and suffer extreme pain but also suffer from Rheumatoid & Osteoarthritis as well as Fibromyalgia and chronic depression. Obviously some of my pain may still be attributed to my other conditions but if the chronic ab pain can be removed I'll be opting for the full hysterectomy- I've just turned 40 xx

Hey,

It has been a while since your post and you oopherectomy. I am wondering if you still are happier with the oopherectomy choice over lupron, as I am about to make the same move.

Thank you!
