Volunteering

I have been wanting to volunteer in general, like for the homeless or something, but since being diagnosed with this cancer, I would really like to volunteer for ovarian cancer somehow. Does anyone here do any volunteering and if so, what kind?

Re: Volunteering

Hey hon, I'm not sure if I can mention this on the boards or not, if not I apologize.
There's a non-profit organization that sends out cards (or gifts if the "Jumper" can afford to) to cancer fighters/survivors/loved ones.

Its called Spirit Jump and was founded by a stage 3 cervical cancer survivor. A person becomes a "jumper" when they sign up. Spirit Jump will email stories of "jumpees"- the people who need their spirits lifted. You email them back with the name/s of the members you'd like to send something to and they email you the mailing address for the Jumpee.

Some jumpees will make requests for gift certificates or monetary donations. You are under NO OBLIGATIONto send anything!! Personally I've gone to the dollar store, picked up a pack of "thinking of you" cards and write personal messages to the person in need of spirit lifting. 8 cards for $1-2 and the cost of stamps. I like it because ts something I can do around my schedule/energy level.

Re: Volunteering

Hi gire!

You have such a generous heart! I think that offering your support and encouragement to women here on Hystersisters.com would be a great volunteer gig -- and one that is available 24/7 every day of the year -- as your daily personal schedule and other commitments permit, of course. It's worked for me!

Re: Volunteering

Yeah, I have had a really bad 2 years with everything from being divorced, having no job no money, being diagnosed with eplilepsy, etc. But being diagnosed with cancer has far been the hardest thing I have ever been through and want to help people like me. I am still going to help the homeless as I was homeless off and on as a child and it is something I feel strongly about, but I really want to help people with ovarian cancer and help spread the awareness about it somehow. Thank you both for your suggestions, they are great.

Re: Volunteering

Maybe you can contact your local American Cancer Society and ask, or the national organization for ovarian cancer (momentary lapse of memory, I don't know the name of it). I think it is great you want to give back, your unfortunate experiences will help others and show them that they can perservere (sp?). I would like to offer my ear to ladies who are facing the same major surgery I have gone through since it is such a rare surgery and it is difficult to find somebody to talk to who has been through it. There were 3 of us getting the surgery the same week and it was sad because one of us was not able to proceed with the operation due to spread, I felt devasted for her and I did cry for her. But I think it is great what you are doing.
