Freaking out 1 day before surgery

Boy am I a wreck. I haven't finished christmas shopping or wrapping, I tried to get the house all clean and my vacuum broke, and to top it all off, I got my period too. lol? I am filled with second doubts about surgery, it is elective, but terrible pain, fibroids and bleeding along w/ enlarged uterous, possible endometriosis and poly cystic ovary syndrome seem to warrant the surgery. Help!--Also am a worle famous puker and am worried about anesthesia and pain meds. Thanks to all and wish me luck. or not sure anymore.

Freaking out 1 day before surgery

Pepper - You are fully entitled to feel the way you feel today. I had my surgery one week ago today, and can tell you I was not in the best shape last Tuesday. BUT, you also are fully entitled to FEEL GOOD! Yes, you may be technically having "elective surgery" (I guess mine could be called that too since it I had endo and cysts, etc.) but there is nothing elective about the pain and suffering you are currently experiencing.

There are wonderful meds they can give you to control nausea - don't hesitate to take advantage of them. When I woke up I felt queasy, mentioned it, and they gave me some meds through my IV. Before I knew it, the nausea was gone. Didn't have any other problems until thursday afternoon and evening. Each time I asked for the anti-nausea med and it worked like a champ. Plus it has the added effect of making you drowsy so you fall asleep for a little while!

If the pain medicine they give you initially isn't working, or makes you feel funny, ask for something else. You will still feel some pain no matter what you are taking, but in my case, the morphine pca pump wasn't giving me any relief. After 24 hours I asked for Vicodin and it worked great. So, don't think there is only one kind of pain relief out there!

My thoughts will be with you over the next few days as you move to the Princess side of the website! Think good thoughts and remember to let yourself be pampered! Best Wishes!

Freaking out 1 day before surgery

Hi pepperdee,

My sister also gets nausea from anesthetic. Now that she knows this, they give her antinausea patch before surgery (like a day or two before). Check with your doctor and see if this is an option for you.

Oh joy, who wants to pay to fix vacuum or get a new one during the holidays!! You'll have all the excuses available for those dust bunnies.

I was nervous two days before surgery also, but ended up being very calm the day I went to the hospital. Electing to feel better is an acceptable choice. Waiting to hear from you on the other side.
