No direction from hospital/dr about hysterectomy on Monday

Hi All,
I have my surgery this Monday. I haven't received any prep instructions from my gyno nor the hospital, regarding the TAH. No cleansing wash, no special diet, nothing. And yes, I have called to ask a few times, with no return call.
Freaking out a bit as this is being done because of a suspicious complex cyst and my mom passing away from OVCA 2 years ago, at 60.
Since I have had to be my own advocate (and thank goodness I was since the cyst is rapidly growing and is now the size of a grapefruit), I feel a bit lost in the paperwork.
I haven't taken any meds or vitamins for 2 weeks to be safe.
Should I restrict my diet and do a bowel cleanse since the oncologist will be there at surgery for the "just in case" scenario?
Thanks ladies! You are awesome!

They didn't even tell you not to eat/ drink after a certain time? There may not be a diet, bowel prep or cleanse, but normally they would tell you when to stop eating and what meds to take/stop if you are on any.

Re: No direction from hospital/dr about hysterectomy on Monday

I had a TAH on October 7th at 8am. The only thing I had to do was stop eating or drinking at midnight the night before. I was also told NOT to take any of my meds the day of surgery.

I hope someone from the hospital or doctors office calls you back.

Good luck and we will see you on the other side.

Re: No direction from hospital/dr about hysterectomy on Monday

Do NOT do a bowel cleanse unless you were specifically told to do one. Some hospitals prefer to administer an enema when you arrive. If you do both, you're going to end up dehydrated.

The hospitals where I live have a standard "no eating or drinking after midight" rule for any procedure or surgery in which the patient is going to be sedated. If you haven't been given any other instructions, I would suggest going with that one and not worrying about the rest.

In my case, the only instructions I was given for the day before and day of surgery were:
- Clear liquids only after 5 PM;
- Nothing to eat or drink after midnight (*except* normal meds with a sip of water);
- Don't wear or bring scented products to the hospital.

No bowel cleanse, no special wipes or soaps.

Please do not do a bowel prep if you have no instruction on that.

Re: No direction from hospital/dr about hysterectomy on Monday

My surgery is this week as well, and I was just told the standard "nothing to eat or drink after midnight" scenario. When I called to question a bowel prep they said no. I asked if I could continue with any meds, especially ibuprofen, they told me I really didn't need to worry about it, but if I wanted to discontinue my ibuprofen 24 hours ahead of time, or only take half my usual dosage the day prior, it was up to me. I was surprised that was it! I know some doctors like to err on the side of caution when it comes to things like infection, but I think sometimes it can be overkill - I'm kind of glad my doctor isn't all "don't shave, use this soap, bowel prep, eat this, don't eat that, take this pill, then this pill, then this suppository, etc.". I think it would make me nervous to have to do all that! I'm just going to wake up in the morning and walk in to the hospital and say "Here I am, let's do this already!"

Re: No direction from hospital/dr about hysterectomy on Monday

Im having my hysterectomy in a few days and both my dr surgery and hospital were wonderful with pre-op instructions. I was told to cease any aspirin type medication (which I'm not on) due to risk of bleeding, advice on taking mild laxatives the week leading up to surgery as well as amino enema to have the night before. I'm also required to have ablood test Tuesday for group & cross match in case I need a transfusion. My pre op interview with the hospital was also great, as they told me what to expect postop, what to bring in etc. as I'm having a TVH I was also told to shave with clippers the day before, no razors due to risk of cuts.
Also the usual fasting times.

Re: No direction from hospital/dr about hysterectomy on Monday

Hi each doctor performing surgery has different rules on what to do and not do before surgery. I did not have a pre-op appointment because pre-op instructions were mailed to my home when I scheduled my appointment at least 1 mo in advance and about two weeks before the anesthesia department called and asked me a series of questions such as what meds was I taking and gave me pre op instructions such as those already given via us mail.

Was your surgery confirmed? Can you call yor doctors office to speak with the nurse or doctor who is on call?
