new and scared...
Hi all,
I just posted on the newbie site, and have some questions, please.
As I posted before, my hysterectomy is scheduled for 6-28-05, depending on outcome of my consult with Oncologist on 6-3-05. ( I posted quite a bit of my history on the introduce yourself, so I hope I am not boring you all here...) My Mom lives with my family and I, and she has been battling lung cancer for 14 months. I have been her main caretaker. I, unfortunately, put off my yearly pelvic and it was almost 2 years since my last one when I went recently. My Gyno felt what she has thought is a fibroid and scheduled me for a pelvic sono asap in March, well, I just went and did it May 18....Gyno called me this past Mon., and not only do I have the fibroid, but I have a mass on my right ovary that is solid, and growing. At my last check I was told I had a possible small cyst that was "leaking" and it should resolve within 2-3 menstrual cycles, not a big deal, and nothing more. This mass is in the same spot, and she feels it is not a cyst but solid...she said chances of it being malignant are small, but that it is growing, solid, and that she could not rule out a malignancy. I also have a bladder disease called interstitial cystitis. It is painful, chronic, incurable, and it "flares" with my menstrual cycle I was diagnosed with it 8-03. My Gyno. feels like not only will the total hysterectomy be needed due to the ovarian mass, but that it may help a lot of my IC pain, dysfunctional bleeding, etc. I talked with my Gyno. and told her I wanted to discuss my case with my Mom's Oncologist prior to surgery, and she was fine with that. I have had some "symptoms", but they all are also symptoms of my IC and IBS. I am sorry this is so long...I guess I am just wondering has anyone else had a "solid" ovarian mass that was benign? I am just so scared, and feel like my head is not on my body, like I am in a bad dream...I was 40 in January, have a great hubby of 22+ years and we have one son who is 19. Any replies or thoughts will be so appreciated...
Thanks all for "bearing with my long novel"
Take Care,
KF

Kayfaye;
Welcome to our corner of the net. I too am a caregiver and not much older than you. I care for my husband who survived a major stroke at the age of 41. He is 44 now.
And I like you put his care first and waited 3 years to get a physical. Isn't it a shame we tend to forget to care for ourselves until it is too late and we need more medical care than we did before.
I do not have a mass like you. I am blessed with that. But I do have many things going on. I too have been diagnosed with Interstitial Cystitis, just this past month. I also have PID, and Adenomyosis.
I just wanted to welcome you and let you know that there are others here in the caregiving role who understand the special circumstances and needs of a caregiver.
Ces.

Thanks, Ces...I am sorry to hear about your husband, that is so young for a major stroke! I work in the field of Occupational Therapy (when I am able to work), so I know you have your hands full as a Caregiver...How is your IC doing? I have really had a time of it with it, hope this hyster. doesn't make it worse, I have heard both good and bad regarding hysterectomies and IC...oh well, I don't have a choice anyways...Good Luck to you and thanks again for your quick reply...I am just so scared of the whole surgery thing, I have trouble with anesthesia, so that is always an ordeal...oh well, I always say "everyone has a row to hoe, some of us just have more weeds"...

Hi KF,
I too have an 8 cm mass on my left ovary. It has distinct solid areas but I have the impression it's not completely solid. I can empathize with your concerns. Particularly with regard to caring for your mom in the midst of all this waiting and wondering. I have 2 young children and my hubby works lots so I take on most of the parenting responsibilities. I have a final ultrasound on 5/31 and then they want to schedule a laparotomy if things look the same. My abdominal swelling is worse so I think it may be growing. The truth is it's out of our hands. Do your best to choose drs that you feel confident with. Follow all of their instructions and use the support of this website to encourage you. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers and we will face this new life challenge together with all the other women on this website. It's comforting to know there are others thinking of and relating to your current circumstances. Hang in there.
