'packing' after hyster?

Thanks heaps Sisters!! I've already had my pre-op with GYN so will give his office a call as he never mentioned it. I know a friend had only repair work done by same GYN & she did have packing (she later went on to have a TVH).

I'm not worried as I'm staying very positive about my surgery (it's the result I wanted!!) & if I do have packing it's a means to an end so to speak! I just like being prepared!!

Many thanks!!!!!

'packing' after hyster?

I was told that I would have packing. I did and had read it wouldn't be that comfortable to have taken out. So when the time came to have him remove it I wasn't on a pain pump, oral meds 24 hours after surgery, the dr came and removed it and it didn't fill great but didn't kill me either, felt like the worlds longest dryest tampon.

Not everyone gets packing. I didn't, neither did my Mom nor my pal from work.
Some women on here got packing because they had more extensive repairs done and their Dr. made the decision while operating that they needed packing to help drain the abdominal cavity.
Ask your Dr.
And, I think it's just insensitive that people are not more careful about what they are saying to you at this time... you need support, not more anxiety.
I wish you a smooth and uneventful recovery- think positive!

I don't think anybody is being insensitve, just passing on factual information. I was glad the people here posted facts so that I was a better informed patient and knew what to expect. I've gained alot from the support and information provided by those who have already experienced hysterectomies.

NJM - I am referring to the poster's friend who made a careless, if not insensitive, comment.
Such comments cause needless anxiety and it is sad that people don't censor their comments appropriately.

I had a TAH and did not have any packing. I've had sinus surgery twice and had packing in my nose both times. Certainly can relate with your dad about having that removed.

You are very smart to be prepared so you don't have any unexpected surprises at surgery time. Good luck to you!

I didn't have any packing when I had my hys. I don't remember if my mom did or not. (It was almost 16 years ago.) It's good to be prepared but don't stress too much over it.

Best of luck to you.

'packing' after hyster?

Hi Yolly,

I too had the packing and it didn't hurt coming out just felt a little weird. I also had it years ago when I had a bladder repair done and it did hurt more so I was concerned but I think because it comes out within 24 hours no crud gets to build up on it. My previous time it was left in a few days. Goodluck!

Up until yesterday, I had no idea if I'd have it or not after surgery. At my pre-op appt, I decided to ask my doctor about it and she confirmed that I will have packing after my TVH with A&P repairs. I have to say I am not exactly looking forward to it.
