Worried about low blood oxygen and pain

I am scheduled for a da vinci total hysterectomy on March 9. In previous surgeries I've experienced problems with low blood oxygen that seems to get worse with each surgery. I always wake up with oxygen under my nose but it doesn't seem to help much. I am also concerned because I have a high tolerance to pain meds (due to a bad dr. and six years of back pain) and was wondering if they use a pain pump for da vinci. Thanks

Re: Worried about low blood oxygen and pain

Unfortunately, your history is very different from mine, so I have no personal experience to give you advice from. However, those both look like questions to ask your doctor ahead of time. Don't be afraid to ask these questions of your doc, they are valid concerns.

Best wishes!

Re: Worried about low blood oxygen and pain

I can relate to the low oxygen levels. I have asthma and have to be monitored constantly when I have surgery. After my hysterectomy my oxygen was in the low 90s and had to have respiratory therapy come in several times. I also have a high tolerance to pain meds from chronic kidney stones. I pass one about every month and it seems like the pain meds are never-ending. My DR did have me on a pain pump after surgery (mine was done vaginally) and in recovery instead of the nasal canula they had me on a non-rebreather mask. Both were very helpful to me. Perhaps you can talk to your DR about these options and if they would be appropriate to you. Hope all goes well!

Re: Worried about low blood oxygen and pain

i also have issues with my oxygen saturation levels and my blood pressure dropping after surgery, so i just tell the nurses a head of time so they know i'll be setting off alarms and to monitor me closely. i also let the anesthesiologist know as well in case they have trouble getting me to breathe on my own after surgery.
