my husband took two weeks off to be with me. i truly appreciated it. he cooked for me, went to the store to get my gas-x and stool softeners, went to the video store and got movies, answered the phone, the door, did the laundry. and he did numerous chores around the house he had been putting of. if he was out of the house he made sure i had a phone beside me and a glass of water and he took his cell phone outside. i didn't really need him, so to speak, but it was definitely nice to have him there. he kept me from trying to do things i should'n't have been trying to do to begin with. but knowing me as he does, he didn't try to smother me. he would give me several hours to myself, to read or sleep, or whatever i wanted to do. sometimes he'd just go outside and do yard work or work on his bikes, wash the cars/bikes clean the gutters, etc. everyother day he went to the gym for a couple of hours. my third day back he had to be gone for a few hours and i had a friend come over and sit with me. i could have been alone at that point, but we were not sure when we asked her to come over right after the surgery. so i guess the answer is, most definitley the first week, even more so if there are children at home. let him give this time to you as his gift, he obviously cares about you or he would not even offer. besides he needs his assurances that you will be alright and looking after you for a week will make him feel better. good luck
