TAH: Removing appendix during hysterctomy??

One thing I forgot about todays doctor appointment was he said he would remove my appendix while he was in there...he said it was easy access and would prevent a problem in an organ that I dont need. Has anyone had this done and would it make any difference one way or another? Would any of you suggest not having this done?

I have never had a problem with the appendix but then again everyone I know that has had a problem ended up having it removed so I guess avoiding a possible future surgery is good but then again I know more people who dont have problems with theirs then those that do.

Any ideas?

Hi, I read your other post as well, so glad to hear things are looking up for you.Sometimes things do work out for a reason...and a good reason I have heard of the appendix being removed during a hysterectomy. With all you have been through on insurance coverage issues you better call your health insurance to make sure they will pay for it. I say that cause I learned from mine that they would only cover 50% of it versus 90%(what they covered for tvh, tvt) because it was a secondary surgery and it was on a HEALTHY organ. Karen

It used to be routine to remove the appendix. It isn't anymore. IMHO I don't like removing healthy organs, yes it could have issues at some point but I only know of 2 people that have had appendix removals and they were at young ages (20's).

I am not sure on the insurance thing, the doctor just said that the fact that he was doing TAH it was accessable and he would just take it at the same time, I think that means no extra expense but you are right, I better check. I know they are taking the "surrounding" tissue because of my strong family history of female cancers (including cervical and ovarian) and the appendix was included in the surrounding tissue. I dont know, maybe I will call the office tomorrow to ask for sure.

Hi, Not sure why you need hysterectomy but I had tah , ovaries, omentum out for some malignant cells in ovaries. It turns out they also took appendix, i did not consent for this. Personally i don't really care, I think they remove it as hyst a big abdo op. Appendix tend to get inflamed , they also are one of the places ovarian ca likes to sit. I reckon rather than having to go through a 2nd op they may as well whip them out......
