3 days post hysterectomy: Scared of vaginal cuff!

I am 3 days post op LAVH and things are going great....I just can't get the fact that I now have a "cuff" out of my head! I realize this may be a silly concern, but I can't help it and already know I'm going to be absolutely terrified when cleared for sex!
How strong is a healed cuff? Can I ever be at peace or Is there always a chance of it tearing?! Any experienced cuff owners out there with advice?

Re: Scared of vaginal cuff!

Hi! I had my LAVH same day as you. Only kept my right ovary. I worry about having sex for the first time after surgery too. I also workout 6 times a week and have concerns about doing squats, lunges, etc. At the moment, I'm not aware of it....can't feel it if I try and concentrate on that area. Let's hope someone with a healed cuff responds.

Re: Scared of vaginal cuff!

Hi! I'm at the 3 month mark and I'm still treating that area gently. My surgeon used sutures that don't begin to dissolve for 4 months. Everyone is different and you can ask at your follow-up appointment how long they take to dissolve. I haven't had intercourse with a mate, but I have pleasured my self and have had no problems. Most women who have posted about it say that they like to control the depth of penetration and refrain from hard thrusting. You're still very early in your recovery and try not to waste mental energy on issues that may not even be relative to you when the time comes. The complete healing of the vaginal cuff can take anywhere from 6 months to a year so when you do resume sexual activity I'd say being gentle is the most important thing.
