Failed ablation & upcoming hysterectomy... nervous

I am new here & this is my story. I have lived with painful, heavy periods as long as I can remember. I finally said enough is enough & scheduled an appointment with an obgyn. After checking me over & running some pretty painful tests she told me a hysterectomy would be the best thing BUT insurance wouldnt pay for it until after I had an ablation 1st... so I had my ablation sept 22, 2014. At my two week post op checkup she told me she couldnt do the ablation she wanted to because the fluid kept running out so she did the ballon ablation. She also told me it may not fix my problem & scheduled me to come back for a follow up appointment january 14, 2015. Well I was hoping the ablation would work & was upset when my period came with no changes. So at the follow up appointment she told me she was going to do a total vaginal hysterectomy (not sure yet if it will be laproscopic or not). So my surgery date is feb 23, 2015.She's going to remove my uterus & my cervix, she removed my tubes during the ablation because they were swollen & full of fluid (side effect from my tubal litagation surgery in 2000). I get to keep my ovaries, so no automatic menopause. I am nervous about the surgery so any advise from those who are on the other side of this will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Failed ablation & upcoming hysterectomy... nervous

I was lucky, I didn't have to go through ablation. My fibroids were too large. Had my hysterectomy originally scheduled for Feb 3, but they called me with an opening and a week after they called, I was in for surgery.

Mine was laparoscopic, so I had less healing time and scarring. It was SO WORTH being laid up for a couple weeks. Bleeding (that started Oct 27 and was still going on surgery day) is gone. I don't even have discharge.

Take it a day at a time. Recover and rest. And try not to stress out too much prior!!

Glad you had a good experience. Only hope mine goes smoothly. Trying not to stress but that is sooo hard. I keep telling myself it will be worth it once it is over.

I had a UFE that failed. Wished I had just done the hyster in the first place. It's rough going through a procedure that doesn't work. The no bleeding is great!!

Re: Failed ablation & upcoming hysterectomy... nervous

I hate having to go through another surgery, wish the insurance would have let me have the hysterectomy to start with. I get sooo sick after surgery. The hospital almost had to keep me over night, i was the last patient to leave day surgery. Had to be there at 10 am & i was finally released at 8 pm. Long day. Glad you are finally "flow" free. I cant wait until i am on the other side of this.

Re: Failed ablation & upcoming hysterectomy... nervous

I had a failed ablation a couple of years ago so I understand. A sizable percentage of women who get ablations end up with a hysterectomy a few years later so I'm not surprised to be in that group. I'm so happy I got the hysterectomy. I had adenomyosis as well, so I really needed the surgery. Besides some random spotting since my surgery 6 months ago, I've had no more bleeding.

If you're talking about being nauseous after surgery, ask for an anti-nausea patch at the hospital. They put one behind my ear before surgery, I kept it on for a couple of days, and I never had any nausea.

Best of luck!

Re: Failed ablation & upcoming hysterectomy... nervous

Thanks for the pain patch suggestion. The anthesiologist gave me something in my iv before surgery that was suppose to keep me from getting sick... didnt work. After i was out of the recovery room i couldnt stop throwing up (have no memory of being in the post-op recovery room). They finally gave me something else to ease it. Couldnt hold anything down, it was horrible.
