3 weeks Post Hysterectomy. Severe Nerve Pain

I've read other posts about this, but never see an outcome. I am having severe nerve pain on my right side. It starts near my incision and continues down to my leg and upper thigh. My skin is hypersensitive. I can't even wear underwear. Sometimes the pain feels like a charley horse, other times, I feel like I've been set on fire. My GYN has said that he has never, in his 26 years of practice, encountered this and therefore does not feel like it is connected to my TAH. My PCP sent me to the ER last Fri. for CT, culture, blood, etc. The physician there said he believes the pain to be "nerve regeneration" and he prescribed my Skelaxin and Oxycodone. Please, has anyone had this and come out on the other side of it, healed?! I'm praying to Jesus that this is nothing permanent. I'm feeling really discouraged and regretful right now.

Thank you for your help!

Re: 3w1d PostOp. Severe Nerve Pain

I had pain similar to what you are experiencing and it is mostly gone at this point. It's scary to think that you might have this pain for the rest of your life, but you are probably just recovering. Nerve regeneration just means that your nerves are reconnecting and for some reason that process can be painful. I think we all have it in recovery to some extent. Ask your doctor if you can try something like Aspercream. Don't put it on your incision but on the nervy areas below it. It helped me immensely!

Bless you for replying with some positive news!
Thank you so much! I've been concerned that it would interfere with our intimacy once that resumes. I'll just keep praying. I hope you continue to heal as well 💕!

Re: 3w1d PostOp. Severe Nerve Pain

I have been having pins and needles in my legs since my surgery. I just saw my regular doctor for a physical yesterday and we talked about it. She told me that it's basically nerve damage and that it can take up to 2 months for it to resolve. It's from being on the steel OR table with your legs up in stirrups. I hope that's all it is for you! I just thought I would share the info she gave me. If it is nerve damage (which it sounds like) you do have some more time to heal! Hang in there. That would be super frustrating!

Try to desensitize the area. I use my loofah in the shower and gently rub my tummy (Not incision) and down my right side and over my leg. Since I woke up from surgery my right side has severely bothered me also and I am finding this is helping me a ton, I also use an ice pack twice a day on my right side while I rest. This helps the swelling and it soothes my right side of my tummy. Hope this helps

Re: 3 weeks Post Hysterectomy. Severe Nerve Pain

I've started using Eucalyptus essential oil and it helps tremendously, until it's time to reapply. I am still not able to wear underwear, but God willing, this is just a temporary setback. I pray all of you are healed also.
