advantages of vaginal hyst?

Hi I am new here. I had a D&C on Feb. 12 mainly because I am post menopausal for 5 years and I have started bleeding again. The biopsy was benign (thank God) but the doctor said she may want to remove my uterus because she thinks I have Adenomyosis. I am already bleeding again so I am suspecting I will have to lose my uterus. I am wondering what the advantages of vaginal hysterectomy are over abdominal. Obviously there would be less healing time. And our there any disadvantages? Thanks, Faye

I my opinion I think that a vaginal hyster. is less invasive, and yes you are right less healing time as well. All though I did find myself feeling so well after the surgery that I had to remind myself to take it easy, because you don't have a visual scar to remind you.
I'm sure that what ever your dr recommends will be the right one for you.

Faye, the advantage of a vaginal hysterectomy is that the patient doesn't have an abdominal incision. She still has hundreds of internal sutures, so the healing time will be about the same: six to eight weeks. I had a vaginal hysterectomy, and I felt ready to resume normal life six weeks after my surgery.

Vaginal hysterectomies aren't for everyone. If your doctor feels that your uterus is too large, an abdominal hysterectomy would probably be best for you. If you have endometriosis or adhesions, your doctor will probably want to do your surgery abdominally, so that s/he can see how serious those problems are. And some doctors simply prefer to do abdominal hysterectomies, because they require less physical strength on the part of the surgeon.

I'd recommend that any woman who is considering a hysterectomy get at least two medical opinions. Good luck to you, and I'm glad you found Hystersisters.
