Fibroids

Any advise regarding the Mirena IUD to treat a large fibroid uterus. If I proceed with surgery should I chose the LAVH or the Laproscopic supra cervical hyst? My periods are too heavy and crampy and it is time to do something.

I do not have any personal experience with the Mirena IUD.

I was 46 when I chose to have my hyst for two large fibroids. I had a LSH (Laparoscopic SupraCervical Hysterectomy). I had two small hip incisions and a belly button incision. No vaginal work was done.

The surgery type might come down to what type of hyst your Dr. is recommnending, the size of your uterus with fibroid and if you are a good candidate or not to keep your cervix. With my LSH, I kept my cervix (and ovaries). With the LAVH, the cervix is removed and it is a vaginal hyst.

In my opinion...either laparoscopic hyst is an excellent choice. I am still very pleased with my LSH results.

You may want to read through our Fibroid Resources where you should find some helpful information. You can also search the resource database for information about the Mirena Coil and search the site for other threads discussing the coil.

It is always my suggestion to try the least invasive measures first. A hyst is a major, irreversible surgery that is not without risks. Since it cannot be undone, you want to be sure it is the absolute best and right choice for you.
