Back surgery vs TAH
Having had back surgury years ago and approaching TAH, how does getting around compare post op? I keep reading that you can do nothing and need help for everything. What is everything? Can anyone relate?

my experience only
Hi, P French,
One of my dearest friends in high school was a girl named Patty French and so I am compelled to respond to your post!
Well, I have never had back surgery, but I did have a TAH/BSO 8 weeks ago. I spent 48 hours at the castle practicing rising up from bed without using the belly muscles and shuffling down the halls with my new slightly bent over posture with hand under belly for support. I had new sensations when going potty...bowels felt bruised a bit, gas pains for 3 days were really ouchiee, bladder didn't hurt, but felt oddly different when urinating. It hurt to laugh, cough, or use tummy muscles initially, but I learned to use a pillow or tummy binder for support there.
I had help for about a week, but did all of my own showering, dressing, walking, and potty trips. My mom stayed to keep me company and cook. I really was surprised at how good I did feel as compared to what my imagination had conjured up while being pre-hyst.
The worst part of being post-hyst was the boredom and long hours of having to behave. Most of us are use to being so active and you have to stop yourself sometimes and remember you just had surgery. I have been released to all normal activity since week 5....no heavy lifting for 6 months.
I hope this helps...
Warm wishes for a smooth surgery,
Lynn (cappy in chat)

Back surgery vs TAH
Hi, P French:
Had an L5/S1 laminectomy/diskectomy several yrs ago and was in for 9 days. TAH/BSO was easier, even with a vertical incision, and I was home in 3 days.
If I can answer any questions, e-mail me at verlynr@yahoo.com.
Best of luck to you,
Verlyn

Back surgery vs TAH
Hi
My hubby had a three level fusion, L 3,4,5 Laminectomy diskectomy. On the table for 4 1/2 hours. He was on morphine for 3 days and stayed in the hospital 10 days. They took bone from the hip that also gave him a second incision and soreness.
From what I've read of the post op side, the things that are the same: no lifting, difficult getting up or down or rolling over, stepping into clothes, reaching, coughing, laughing etc. Buy a reacher so you won't have to bend over, a back scratcher, pillows to help you roll and hold against tummy, and put all high items on lower shelves or counters. Buy slip over the head comfy house dresses and slip in shoes. Some, buy a binder and love it...but ask your doctor first.
I believe the extensive back surgery was much harder. I had to help bathe and dress him for a long time and putting on socks and shoes was painful. He was on very heavy pain meds and always had an upset stomach. We put a hospital bench in the shower because he could not stand that long. We bought a lift for the toilet seat so he was higher. No chair in the house was comfortable. He has a high threshold for pain but he suffered with recovery. You won't have all of this.
I don't know what kind of back surgery you had, but I think you will fly through your hysterectomy.
Don't worry,
