Slow healing incision, AQUACELL, Sterile Dressings, Wound Care Instructions
Howdy, Sisters!
4+ months post op, I've visited the Wound Care Clinic due to the appx. 1" spot on my vertical midline incision that just never quite healed. After leaving, I've got some questions that I'd like your opinions on, please.
My instructions are to bathe every other day, keeping the dressing as dry as possible and changing it afterward. The process for the new dressing is to first rub surrounding area with Sureprep Protective Wipe, followed by applying a square of ConvaTec AQUACELL Ag, then cover that with a 2"x3" sticky gauze square.
My concern is with the AQUACELL. The nurse instructed me to cut a small square off of this larger rectangle (which was in a sealed sterile foil pack) and to continue cutting squares as needed on bandage change days because "it is kind of expensive and insurance doesn't like to pay for it."
However, I found this stuff for sale online in smaller squares than I was given, something like $60 for 10 quantity... Doesn't seem very "expensive" to me, relatively speaking. And the $60 would be a small price to pay for a guarantee of sterility...And hopefully no more infections.
What do you all think of this and what would you do? And if you have experience with this stuff, how long for your incisions to heal completely? I know some of my Sisters are out there with open incisions and have been struggling much longer than I have been. I hope all our incisions heal quickly! Thanks, Sisters. Love to you all.

I'd run it by her to be sure it's the same stuff, then buy the smaller size myself, I think. Maybe her company only carries the big ones, who knows, but where she gets it may well cost more. Still, I'd rather go with the individual sterile pack, myself. I hope it's working well for you and helps you heal quickly.

I am a nurse and use Aquacell AG quite frequently with wounds. The hopitals/clinics find it expensive compared to just gauze. It really works great. The AG is silver which is a very good antiinfective and patients respond well to it. I dont think it matters where you get it, it shouldn't matter; my company uses a cheaper brand. It is called Algenate AG if youre looking for generic brands/types. Take care. Incision should heal quicker now.

Re: Slow healing incision, AQUACELL, Sterile Dressings, Wound Care Instructions
Hi Jlcdolphins, Thanks for providing me with the Nurse's Perspective! (& Greyown, you always reassure me & make me feel better!
Tell me this, as a Nurse, what is your opinion on the *frequency* of dressing changes?
I understand & have observed how the Aquacell gell - ifies as it absorbes the junk, but in my mind I should be changing it if I can see it discoloring or bleeding thru my double layer external gauze wrap. But the Pr. (**Not Dr**) told me the "stuff is good for up to one week) .....?.... . Suggestions please?
