A little Scared and alot heartbroken

I just got the news today that I need to have a hysterectomy. Actually it was put to me that either I get pregnant or have a hysterectomy. My date for surgery is set as my husband is fully against us having anymore kids. I myself am not sure of this choice. I need to know that I am not alone in second guessing this decission??? Can someone please tell me that it is ok to feel this way... And how I can come to terms with this choice. Thank you

Re: A little Scared and alot heartbroken

Hugs!!! I think it is only natural to second guess the options. Even though I was unable to have any more children I did stress over taking out my uterus. I tried everything under the sun to avoid having TAH. Then I was faced with no more choices and it was emergency. I am a week out today and I have to say I am relieved to have it over. Worrying was the hardest part. Be kind to yourself! Best of luck!

Based on this statement, do you have an endometriosis diagnosis? I ask because I want to be sure you know that a hysterectomy is not a cure for this condition. I would hate for you to have a hysterectomy, especially since you are unsure, and then find out later it didn't solve your problems.

My personal opinion is that no woman should have a hysterectomy unless she is 100% sure it is right for her. There are a lot of other options to treat many of our health conditions that we can try first. There is turning back with this surgery and not all of us have a happily ever after story, so you want to know you made the right choice if you end up on a bumpy road.

Have you had a second opinion yet? You owe it to yourself to have one before making any final decisions. If you do have endometriosis, it would be wise to consult with a doctor who specializes in treating this condition.

You are not alone in your fears and doubts. This is a big deal and it does come with a lot of emotional issues. Do your research, talk to your entire medical team, know your options, and then do what is best for you.

Re: A little Scared and alot heartbroken

I think it's normal to second quess a major surgery. what are you struggling with having surgery in general or not having anymore children? I'm confused why your dr would tell you get pregnant or have hyster.
Have you gotten a second opinion?

Women with endometriosis are sometimes told to get pregnant as the high progesterone levels can minimize the endometriosis implants and symptoms.

Re: A little Scared and alot heartbroken

Hugs to you. "my husband is fully against us having any more kid" this bothers me. Your husband doesn't get to make unilateral decisions for you. If you feel that you are ready to not have anymore children, then a hyster might be a choice for you. It is 100% okay to have second thoughts. This is a major and life changing surgery. I would surely look into a second, third, 187th opinion. On the surface of your post, I think you are feeling pushed into something you don't want to do. No one "wants" a hysterectomy, we end up having to have one. Only you can make the choice to have this surgery. I'm glad you've found us. Use us, question us; we are here for you. Take care : )

Re: A little Scared and alot heartbroken

I'm sorry you're in this situation. Please be sure this is what you want before you go through with it. It's a difficult recovery and very emotional. I went through with it because I felt I had no other option and everyone expected me to do it. And I haven't had a good outcome and I regret my decision. Most people don't have this experience but there are no guarantted with this surgery on what things will be like for you afterwards. Once your uterus is out, they can't put it back. I am very heartbroken to have lost my uterus and even 6+ months later I'm still not over it.
