Bleeding after 5 years????what's this?

Everything has been perfectly normal for the past 5 years. Of course I had the regular recovery time and have battled through the hormone issues, but all in all very normal. Now, 5 years later I am bleeding. I haven't done anything out of the norm and am quite confused by this--Any thoughts?

I'm sorry you're having problems that bring you here but am very glad you've joined and hope you'll benefit from the wealth of information and support!

It would help enormously if you could tell us a little more by completing your Member Survey, since this includes information such as why you had surgery, what type/which procedure and whether or not you kept your ovaries, etc. You can do that by clicking HERE.

Hopefully, when we have more details, we can then try to point you in the right direction. In the meantime, if you've not done so already, please contact your doctor since s/he is the only one who can determine exactly what's going on.

Is the bleeding occuring following strenuous activity ~ for example heavy lifting? Or following sexual intercourse? Is it continuous or intermittent with no apparent trigger?

Unfortunately, there are many possibilities as to the cause. Other ladies with similar concerns, this far down the line, have found the cause to be due to hormone fluctuations (if the cervix and ovaries were kept), or occasionally "breakthrough bleeding" whilst on HRT. (Due to the way the Survey is worded, it's not possible to tell whether you intend to consider HRT in the future or whether you've had to start it since your hysterectomy).

Others who had a TAH (like yourself) can experience problems with their vaginal cuff and I also remember one or two ladies who had developed vaginal polyps that were found to be the cause. These are just a handful of many possibilities.

Please don't hesitate to contact your doctor to nip any potential problems in the bud. It could be something that's easily fixed!
