Re: Keep or Remove Cervix?
The decision to keep or have your cervix removed is a very personal one and unique to you and your health. I have included an article that may assist you in making this decision. Also consult with your doctor and see what his/her advice is. I know this is a difficult decision, especially with your hysterectomy only a few days away. I wish you the best of luck and we are all here to support you!

Re: Keep or Remove Cervix?
I still have mine, not by choice, and still required to go for annual pap smears. A prolapsed bladder had caused incontinence and painful exams, as they had to try and find cervix pushing & prodding past bladder. Keigel exercises have helped, but exams are still painful.
Original surgeon said my hysterectomy was extensive and he opted to keep it in for support. I guess the alternative is mesh, so I am not sure which is best. Good luck in your decision, and I wish you all the best!!

What you decide can also be influenced by your diagnosis, and whether your cervix is affected. I had fibroids, and my surgeon wanted to do an LAVH, citing the chance of more fibroids growing there, and the cancer risk associated with morcellation, among other things. However, my cervix was completely healthy, with no history of cancer or other issues, and my research indicated that keeping it would be better for my recovery and long term health. We discussed it at our next appointment, and settled on LSH, which turned out exceptionally well. You need to do your own research, and speak with your surgeon, so you can decide on what's best for your individual situation. Best wishes for whatever you decide!

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 3/14: Keep or Remove Cervix?
I agree that this is a personal decision. I must say that for myself it was not a hard decision to make. I never wanted to remove my cervix; I only had fibroid issues and my past Pap smears were normal. The first gynecologist I went for an opinion wanted to do a TAH. So I went for a second opinion. The second gynecologist was on the same page as me. Reason he gave me for keeping the cervix was to prevent organ prolapse. I definitely agreed with him. I also didn't want to remove more of my body parts than I needed to.
