Prolly a dumb question

OK maybe this sounds dumb but I have never heard of this until I came here. What is a vaginal cuff? How do I know if I have to have one? I am having a TAH.

Re: Prolly a dumb question

If you are having a Total hyster that means they are taking the entire uterus - including the cervix.

When they take out the cervix - the bottom of your uterus that extends into the top of your vagina, they have to stitch the vagina together at the top forming a "cuff."

Hope that helps!

Re: Prolly a dumb question

Be reassured there is no such thing as a dumb question. Don't be afraid to ask away. I actually thought that was a good question so thanks for asking it.

Re: Prolly a dumb question

Thank you ladies. I guess I need to talk to my Dr. about it too. She didn't mention this to me before.

Re: Prolly a dumb question

My doctor discussed all this with me when I decide to have my surgery. We went over it again the day of my surgery. She did this just to make sure I understood everything we discussed in her office and to see if I had any other questions.

Best of luck with your surgery. It was the best thing I have done. Should have done it sooner.

Re: Prolly a dumb question

Ok. So they call it a cuff because of the stitches? Does it feel different/ weird?

Re: Prolly a dumb question

The way I understood it is they call it a cuff because it kind of looks like the toe of a tube sock. I am not sure if it has anything to do with the stitches though: that's a good question.
As for feeling weird or different; no it does not really feel different. The only things I feel is a little bit of a prickly feeling but I normally think that is just the nerves waking up.

There's no such thing as a dumb question! In fact, that's a great question! You might find the Post-Op Article, Vaginal Cuff After Hysterectomy - What is it? helpful. My doctor referred to it as a 'cul-de-sac'.
