Re: Painful sex 3 months post-op

Forgot to mention that my doctor also recommended an estrogen suppository that you would use once a week (vaginally) to help the tissues become more pliable. I have not tried this yet because I wanted to see if things would improve with just changing lubricants. Hope this helps.

You are still healing and as you noted you do have a vaginal cuff because your cervix was removed.

There are several reasons why intercourse may cause pain.

One is granulation. This can be caused by the way the tissue heals. Sometimes it is a rough spot that may bleed after intercourse. Other times as others have noted it can be a band of tissue. I had that and it healed over my vaginal cuff and would cause me pain issues. The Dr. snipped it and it resolved on it's own.

Another one can be lubrication issues and vaginal atrophy. Usually this accompanies the removal of ovaries. It appears in your profile that you kept your ovaries so unless they went into shock after the surgery and aren't functioning properly you should be okay on the lubrication front. In early stages of healing extra lubrication can help and some Drs prescribe vaginal estrogen to help the healing.

The third can be a condition called vaginismus. This is a pain cycle where your muscles contract and won't allow penetration or penetration is painful. If the cycle of pain continues, ex. you fear pain, you tense up there is pain so next time you fear pain, you tense up, there is pain, etc. etc.. It can become a chronic condition. I had this and went through pelvic floor physical therapy to retrain my muscles.

Please talk all of this over with your Dr. so you can find out what is causing the issue and get it addressed.
