Incontinence post hysterectomy

Hi,
To those of you who have had a hysterectomy, I was wondering if you
have had any post op bladder problems?

I'm hugely embarassed about this, but I am having continence issues,
which is apparently not uncommon, but still horrible to experience.

My GP did some urine tests to make sure it wasn't a UTI, but
definitely wants me to go back and see my gynae, which I am doing this
week. He is excellent, but I just so wanted all my problems to be
over with the hysterectomy.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this.
Thanks
Kate

Kate, I have not had incontinence post op, but I wanted to suggest you may want to consider a TVT if your situation does not improve. It is a brief, outpatient, minimally invasive procedure and only a day or two recovery time. You can read about it here.

Before my surgery, I had leakage if I coughed or sneezed without "bracing" myself--very embarassing and annoying. Also lost half my bladder contents when I ran a 5K race. Since my procedure, I have sneezed, coughed, and no matter how unexpected it is, I no longer leak. So it was very much worth the trouble.

Incontinence post hysterectomy

Me too, Kate. I am a little over 3 months post op and continue to have little problems even though I had a repair with my TAH. I am practicing Kegels to try to avoid more surgery at this time. It seems to help. I am also getting more than my fair share of UTI's!! Oh, and Doc has warned me to make sure I am completely emptying my bladder when I do go. Sometimes I actually have to sit a few seconds after I think I am done only to end up going a little more. He also has said because we get into the habit of holding it, we can weaken the muscles so make sure to go as soon as you feel an urge. But, don't be embarrased!! We will just deal with it like we deal with every thing else and hopefully you can get some relief.

Incontinence post hysterectomy

Me three Kate. I talked with my gp and have a referral to a urogyn but not until Sept. I wet my bed the other night and seem to dribble the day away. I am glad I am able to see the specialist. I hope there is someone you can talk to about this. It is hard to isn't it? Sometimes I wonder why I bother with the paper sheet any more at the drs because there isn't much of me at this point they haven't seen!!!! It is funny but it still makes a difference. Marg

Dear Kate,

I've not had this problem but I can relate to just wanting all your problems to be over with the hysterectomy.

You are at the right site to find encouragement and ideas that will help.
