Adenomyosis higher risk for Endo?

Hey ladies,

I'm curious...does having Adenomyosis put me at higher risk to also develope Endometriosis?

I can't seem to find that answer online but it seems like you see them together a lot of times...

Thoughts?

Re: Adenomyosis higher risk for Endo?

Hi, I have suspected adenomyosis and a fibroid.
Here's what I have found from different studies that I have read.
When you have adenomyosis, you are 11 - 12% likely to also have endometriosis, 50% to also have a fibroid, and 7% to also have an endometrial polyp.
If anyone has found any different results, please feel free to correct me.
Best wishes on your journey

I am not very sure if that's true but from as much as i have heard about it... yeah... the chances are slightly getting upper. Don't want to scare you but that's what I've heard. after all, it doesn't automatically means that you would have it, only means that the chances of geting it are a big higher.

Re: Adenomyosis higher risk for Endo?

Well, I don't know how much you should even think about statistics like that, honestly. I had about a one in a zillion chance of getting pregnant at 42 while using protection-- and THEN a massive degenerating fibroid, and THEN having a fairly dormant adenomyosis kickstarted into horrible pain by the myomectomy-- but that all happened. Statistics don't tell us much. Also, I have a really small amount of endo, but it seems that the adeno is what's causing the pain-- my point being there's a really wide range of endo, from mild to incapacitating. So the odds of someone with adeno developing incapacitating endo are much less than what you've cited above. It doesn't seem like your odds are huge. And all we can deal with is what we're faced with now. But I think I understand your dilemma.

Re: Adenomyosis higher risk for Endo?

Hi all,
Here's some of the sites I got my info from. I've been doing so much research for months, there's no way I can find them all.

Brigham and Women's Hospital > adenomyosis and endometrial polyps

www.alternativesurgery.com>adenomyosis

I agree that statistics are just that, statistics. I'm such a research freak about what's going on in my body right now. Each of us are unique! What we have or don't have has very little to do with numbers. We deal with what we have. I am personally doing research, asking questions, and then will make a decision on what is best for me. That's what I like about HS - talk & support each other, then do what's best for you.

Re: Adenomyosis higher risk for Endo?

What are you trying to decide?

I have (they think) adeno. And i definitely have a bit of endo, that they found when I had a myomectomy a few months ago. But it was only a little bit, and wouldn't explain the amount of debilitating pain I'm in. Everybody's suggesting a hysterectomy, but no one can guarantee that it will remove the pain entirely. It's just a risk I have to take. And I hate it.

Re: Adenomyosis higher risk for Endo?

I'm trying to decide whether to have a hysterectomy or not. My suspected adeno seems to be advanced. I'm in pain every day even when taking prescription pain meds. My doc gave me a stronger pill to help me survive, but that made my stomach have such severe pain. I'll never take that again! I'm now starting to spot again, after taking continuous bc. It was nice to not bleed for over a month, but here we go again. I'm leaning toward getting a hyster. I'm getting worse and don't think I can hold out till menopause. You're right, it's a risk we'll both have to take. I hate it too!

Best wishes for a pain-free future!!!!

Re: Adenomyosis higher risk for Endo?

Wow. We're in almost the exact same situation-- except I also have fibroids. How old are you? I'm 42, and I think my mom had menopause late. I hate hate hate the idea of hysterectomy, but what can we do? I mean, I can't live my life. I'm in pain all the time, and I'm on narcotics (I'm on dilauded now, and even that isn't strong enough sometimes.) I just don't really have any other options besides hysterectomy. As I said above, I can't take hormonal therapies because of migraines (I'm a stroke risk) and the doctor said that they rarely work for this kind of adeno pain anyway. It's true that the pain might come back. And that could be awful. But I can't live like I'm living and I seem to be all out of non-surgical options.

That said, I'm going to a guy on Weds to talk about a nerve block. I doubt it will alleviate the pain enough that I don't need surgery, but maybe to keep me off of as many narcotics until surgery. I'm not really sure what the thing does, or even what it's called. I'll let you know how that goes.

Re: Adenomyosis higher risk for Endo?

I have a 4.5 cm fibroid also. I'm pretty sure the adeno is causing most of the pain/symptoms (with fibroid contributing of course.) I'm 48, mother went through menopause early (43).

I don't want a temporary fix and end up doing surgery anyway. But......the thought of a hyster scares me and then I change my mind again. I'm the main financial supporter of the family and also homeschool, so that's all running around in my head knowing I'll need time to recover.
Like you, I know I can't continue this way. I had a difficult time at work today - tired, emotional, & in pain; but still put on a smile for my patients. I work in music therapy.

I noticed your hyst date is Aug 12. I wish I had a date set before I change my mind again, and again . Lol
